Environmentalism means that we ask that each week you bring your own reusable coffee mug, and that you do your part to help keep our beaches and oceans clean (and occasionally we organize cleanups!). Early crew (@shantkurdian , @nickmanzek , @asap_furb ) and post-pic arrivals of @charlottemwirth and @anthonydenitto meant that 15 Spicolis shredded on a fine Friday in LA where May gray definitely its way (bars). @charlottemwirth had her SURF DEBUT with @vanessapaliy teaching her and she got the hang of it REALLY quickly (LFG). @anthonydenitto went with just board shorts and was not cold at all. @olafsson7 got dount on his shirt which was totally not my fault, as I am off to (in Drake voice) THE BAY AREA-UHHH. I also became an Ella Fella. @benramirez818 is also off to (in Drake voice) THE BAY AREA-UHHH to see his sister graduate from Berkeley (insert Berkeley-ism here). @itsyourfetish is BACK and is catching waves better than ever on his yacht of a longboard. @maxabillionmusic said one more wave, 5 more times and did NOT get stung by a stingray. @ashlynnmalia dialed in through her dad Jim, who brought the Sea Walkers, and brought AKUA to Crew once again (LFG). @amandacoscarelli has an pop-up at/near Pasadena that she’s super excited to host (DM her, check it out!). The trio of @brothawoods.1096 @jstnquiane and one more caught plenty of rights. Post-crew, we caught up with @ashhdobe , who loves Saby’s cilantro sauce AND just bought got her dream car! Ela está muito feliz! That’s it from me, it was a happy Friday as I’m realizing driving from LA to the Bay, stuffed from Saby’s burritos (#1, bar none). Forever grateful for a phenomenal crew, who never fail to put a smile on my face. It was also my 1-year crew anniversary (🕯️), wow how time flies. Never in a million years could I have imagined meeting the lovely, kind and tight ‘Ohana that LA Surf Crew is and gone through the past year without them. The sense of community here is amazing, and the sense of belonging here is palpable. 7:30am, Fridays, at Dockweiler. VAMOS!

Sometimes you just need to surf. Today was one of those days for me. I had a week - a set of challenges that almost knocked me off planet sanity. But Surf Crew is magic like that — you simply cannot be anything but grateful around this group. And the waves even cooperated today. Really fun northwest windswell peaks with east wind, with a couple proper waves. Super super fun. Quincy brought Mom and QQ and Zoe are going to take her to see some jazz. Ben had a better week but he and I aren’t writers. Poor Max kicked a stingray! (Swipe for evidence). JC went on a run and might come back for August concerts. Ashlyn knew what windward meant and went for Sabby’s; Nick didn’t shred but hung and might go to the Bu; Ioulia is back from her travels; Anthony couldn’t believe Q’s news (neither could I); Max did his normal cold plunge; Vanessa got hired off only one reference; Justin has a start and will have a party; Ash has a birthday this weekend for a friend and still the best wax design; Paulina found the lefts and likes her new board; and Alex rep’d for the Bruins. Might even count lifeguard Ian as 31. Epic turnout (you know it’s Spring when…). Spicoli of the week goes to @joncarlvera for making the most 💣tamales I’ve (ever!?) had. @pjohansson_ pls tag your friend! @benramirez818 please tag your friend! And @anthonydenitto please tag your friend! Love all the new faces. Welcome! I sorta did an interview this past week and the writer was saying to me just how hard it was to find quality community in LA. And I will absolutely say we have created it at Crew. Unfortunately don’t have time to give individual highlights this week but would love to know what you remember about Crew and what made you smile this week. We got THREE rounds of donuts—one 711 pick up from the Zoe/Quincy/Anthony mobile, one Randy’s from Holden, and JC picked your order up!” After college, I moved to Los Angeles with dreams of working in the music industry. One of my favorite things during my early time in LA was getting to go to Coachella with @yarightnoah @mr_robo @lindsey.fell @mjpeha and @thomasduport . These days I’ve only been to Coachella once in the last 6 years because of a pandemic and kids. My better half has to work there, so I get to hold down the home fort. Well, today both children were sick with the flu and I was trying to pretend it hadn’t gotten me yet, but when the little guy woke up with a fever, I had to message the group thread and tell everyone I wasn’t coming and neither were the donuts nor the coffee. But in a split second, three separate groups rushed to the rescue and multiple donut options were secured as well as some Sevies coffee. So the moral of the story is: if you’re young enough to be going to Coachella this weekend with zero responsibilities, good friends, and nothing to worry about — enjoy it. I promise you’ll miss it one day! And if you’re unlucky enough to have your household all come down with the flu, take solace in the fact that your community is so strong that 3 people will jump in to help you when you’re down for the count. @marshall_like_the_store @yetibeats @dreskull and Kate’s three lifeguarding friends made for 19 Spicolis on a day of fun windswell, warm water, and consistent waves. Zoe had a slow week; Fetish is off to Nica near the Boom; Justin has a background; Anthony knows how to pronounce audio equipment; Vaughan invited me to a Black Ball gathering; Max is still trunking it; Paulina is back with a different short board; The Bruins are also shortboarding; Max is the last one out; JC’s last will be July 17; Josh realized he had to come back due to Justin; and Nick told me I have to tell him when I’m on the early. Fun waves; old friends; donut holes. Grateful for such a fun morning 🏄🏻‍♂️🏝️🍋‍🟩

It’s amazing what a few good vibes, some friendly faces, and some surfing can do for your mood. I was not in the best spot driving to Crew today — and I just have to say you all really cheered me up. Thank you. @nick___wallace showed me a crazy scar and truly inspired me. @amandacoscarelli got asked at the entrance if she’s a surfer. @joogwinik is getting good at using the AI. @vanessapaliy likes the donut holes and thinks Hawaiian music is Christmas music. @anthonydenitto never transitioned to full suit this year and confuses his tarpals with his tarsals. @sammybakesss ’s back and shredding and @benramirez818 says she has no excuse for not coming. @justinpgroth made me happy today. @maxabillionmusic might get a gig (see story and help him out!). @quincyzp has exhausted all housing options but won’t give up. @olafsson7 is rocking a different relay race to SD; @shantkurdian ’s scar has healed nicely; and he and @nickmanzek brought a new face (tag?). 18 in the photo plus @iouiouls makes 19 and plus @rodryan.marayag makes TWENTY…and 35 in the water (according to @sammybakesss ). Maybe people will still show up even if I just buy donut holes ❤️☕️

@olafsson7 didn’t make the photo but made for sixteen Spicolis on a mostly walled small Friday with epic summer conditions and a rapidly heating beach that was hot all week. @vanessapaliy doesn’t have to mother anyone anymore; whereas the Bruins are now drawing a line. @iouiouls has moved to the MV and is trying to figure out how to drive with a board in her car that doesn’t block her view. @pjohansson_ brought a nervous special friend (see last photo) and got out there on her short board; @nick___wallace showed up and is back from his escape to San Diego; @benramirez818 said @kylie.ramirez4eva is writing her book and that they are good; @ashhdobe likes swimming with sharks without a cage; @joncarlvera is trying to get us to dance; @maxack37 must have gone to a good school with such incredible spatial relations; @itsyourfetish is off to Miami and aspires to spin vinyl one day; @justinpgroth doesn’t like inheriting the donuts; @libbyelming is working with a generational talent and with an old friend; and @olafsson7 is spending time in a hot tub staring at a snow-capped Icelandic mountain in the countryside with his family. As for me, my mind is blown by the perseverance of those that use feet instead of hands and I’m trying hard to put music on the very same beach.
