Trashed Earth part 6. My printer from college died. I kept her alive through many print errors, but alas the dreaded error 5100 proved to be unfixable. This printer is now e-waste. There are no parts or servicers to repair it. E-waste makes up about 2% of American land fills, but 70% of overall toxic waste. E-waste is full of precious and toxic heavy metals that contaminate our air, water, soil and all life on earth. “Recyclers” of e-waste often ship it to third world countries where children and adults attempt to strip the parts over an open flame, creating toxic fumes that spread through our environments. We need to stop making toxic products with short life spans that have no plans for recycling.
If anyone knows someone good at lobbying state government to push for waste reform, please get in touch with me.
For now we’ll make some art. I wanted to explore making something real look fake, look modeled and rendered digitally. I find the gap between digital art and real art interesting and wanted to blur those lines.
