Pop songs often save us. Like a city street where something wonderful has unfolded in your life, a pop song can transport you to a memory, an emotion, a dream.
After resisting the charms of previous boy bands–New Kids on the Block, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys et al– for decades, I fell hard for the massively popular British-Irish boy band One Direction (2010-2016). Their songs offered a sunny chance at happiness as I recovered from multiple brain injuries.
In this dizzyingly joyful performative lecture, I will unpack the meaning of 1D songs and quite possibly the meaning of the liminal space we reside in.

Finally made it to this magical place and was treated like family and a rock star at the same time. @thesubjectfilm won Best Feature at last year's (virtual) festival. Last night @sisstorsledge and I sat in their gorgeous theater at the Stony Brook Film Festival and watched four-two shorts, two features-exquisite films. We also got to meet the fabulous Alan Inkles and Kent Marks. Their curation is beyond amazing and their support of The Subject has been unreal. S/O to Paul, Daria, Sara and Josh too. ❤
If you can't make it to the fest, you can watch the films virtually in August, and it is worth it, I promise!

I have loved sunflowers since my next door neighbor had a front yard full of them-all around 6 feet tall- in Seattle. So many years ago.
While wandering around my Brooklyn neighborhood yesterday, I stumbled upon some. ❤🌻
Thought about Seattle, that yard in Ravenna and the great friendships and experiences that city blessed me with. And how much Brooklyn has given me too.
