Making a meadow: we’ve spent the past year returning a construction site to a meadow land— re-introducing wildflower seed, fescue, mowing the walking paths, etc. The effect, effortless beauty!

We approach shrubs, trees and perennial plantings in very different ways and there a nuances plant to plant BUT here is a quick way we help most root bound perennials establish better! Scratching and breaking apart the outer shell of those fibrous roots helps the perennial push roots outward and better establish in its new location!

Before this year, we advertised 1x per year in the @bslaoffice handbook— a font of great landscape architecture! I had the great pleasure of connecting with @nehomemagazine this year and starting to talk about who we are and what our ethos is as a company.
This time of season, we are always so focused on go-go-go that we often don’t look up until the winter sets in! This article was a fun way to start peeping outward.

A garden is every changing so we spend a lot of time thinking through enhancement plantings, filling in areas of the garden where plantings have grown sparse from bunnies or time, rethinking form or use of a space. We talk plants constantly in the spring!
Here is our planting crew finding the best face for a new Gingko; turning the tree until it’s at the best possible vantage.

For every phase of life! We had the great pleasure of working with @localstudioma@katecoughlininteriors@robert_lawrence_builders_llc on this beautiful pool house renovation and thank you @nehomemagazine for showcasing our project!
In this garden space, we reworked the masonry and bed sizing to highlight the openness of the new sliding walls and airy interiors. The garden outside of the pool yard is woodsier and more expansive, so with the plantings, we were intentional in bringing in some low native perennials and weaving in textural groundcovers to hold the space through three seasons, while keeping the site lines.
Our horticulture team brought the interior palette outside with some burnt oranges and dripping, dusty blue spillers in the seasonal containers.

It is a joy when you can work on projects with a great team and clients that support the vision and collaboration. The work shows when the team resonates together!
We think a lot about intentionality in a garden— where to leave moss, when to let vines grow up trees, how to prune back overlapping plants. The decision changes based on the garden aesthetic so maintenance becomes a choice and a balancing act of what is best for the plants, desired by the client or determined by a thoughtful eye.
Mertensia virginica is one of my favorite perennials and shade ephemerals. I try to sneak it into most gardens if our clients let me;) it’s blue is unmatched and in mass it radiates! I think it’s my bias but don’t be afraid to try a few scattered through your shade garden or in an understory planting!
