When asked “How do you begin to write an epic, medieval fantasy script? Where do you even start?” Writer / Director
@lancebwitmer had a few thoughts. “For me, one of the biggest things I love about the genre is details. The really deep backstory and lore that you really can’t thoroughly explore through a single movie, as well as the tiny, almost imperceptible details that you’d need a pause button and a microscope to see. So, since that is what creates a large amount of the immersiveness of a film or series, I like to start with that birds-eye view sort of world-building. Many times for me that means drawing maps, and sort of imagining what kind of people might live in some of these places… How the geography, or the climate or even the boringness of growing up on a point on the map might shape a perspective, and a person’s approach to solving problems. It’s also fun to imagine - ok if I lived all my life in this one little area - what would be my BIGGEST fear - or the most mind-breaking discovery to show up from the larger story world? This way I am actually exploring plot points, and characterization, but somehow it feels less rigid than sitting down with a beat board, or a flow chart or even index cards… that being said - I still need to push myself to get to those things (beat board, story outline, etc.) but for me the maps and then from their perhaps a character sketch, starts to make the world feel tangible. Like it’s something I can actually explore and discover as I write, versus something formulaic.” Above we have the original sketch of the map for our upcoming “Tales of Ardenmore.” Stay tuned as we peek deeper behind the curtain in the coming weeks. . . . . . #epicfantasy #indiefilm #highfantasy #talesofardenmore #medievalfantasy
