Te Mokopapa (I) a Ruatipua | Te Puke o Raetihi Marae
Kaiwhiwhi 13/13 | Tāwhiao Te Rangi McMaster,
@papatawh
Mai i Te Kāhui Mounga ki Tangaroa, moko kanohi is not normal. Let alone from a young age. My cousins, my nieces and nephews have been deprived of this normality. “Why?” I asked our Koroheke and Kuia: “Well because it’s for those who deserve it boy.. only the Chiefs got done look at our portraits darling.. oh it’s not for us to talk of.. but if you’re going to do this, make sure it carries on..” they said. “Ensure it brings us all together from the mountain to the sea..” and “make sure it is passed on to different kokona awa..” I then sought guidance from my uncles, moko artists for all of my life, who said: “Bring the best artists to us and set a good standard for the future”. Ngā Matarau o Paepae Aotea artists from the mātauranga of Tame Poata, are the best. And they supported this.
But I knew I needed help from our tūpuna also. And after meditating by the awa it was Ruatipua who revealed themself to take care of our mokopapa for the years to come. Ancestor of us all from the mountain to the sea which will be the flow of where the mokopapa goes.
This is year 1 of 10 consecutively sponsored Mokopapa by our Ngāporo Waimarino Forest Trust to guarantee its continuity. So long as we take care of the artists - Ngā Matarau o Paepae Aotea it will continue. They have also suggested that we stand-up a ohu tauira of our uri to learn moko which we are undergoing a process of. Our kaiwhiwhi from this year also have their tasks to lead out ahead of next years mokopapa. Grateful for them. Grateful for our marae. Grateful for the masses who came to tautoko.
