“This picture was taken in أنفة / Anfeh, a coastal town in northern Lebanon. My family lives in a village nearby, so we’re often here. The same plastic chairs, the same order of Almaza and carrot sticks, the same men with sunburned shoulders.
On this day, we couldn’t go into the water. The Mediterranean was wild and meters high. Each time I edged closer with my camera, the locals eyed protectively. Lebanon is like that; everyone is your parent.
I asked my cousin to sit for the photo. You see a girl. I see a cedar. To stay steady inside a crashing wave is to be Lebanese.
