✨NADJA is the first improvised piece I ever wrote, layering with a boombox 📻 this is still my favorite piece to play, because it connects me to the most vulnerable and earnest parts of myself

Birds in Berlin 🌚 @boulezsaal @juilliardstringquartet When I was 19 I spent the summer in Berlin, studying composition formally for the first time. This experience shattered my being (in the most fantastic, irreversible way). Discovering Rilke and opera for the first time, running at Schlachtensee, and erasing my work at a piano in the basement of a random house (yes, erasing) because I had yet to discover how to record my improvisations. I felt a deep ache within me to write, but I was terrified (I still feel this so much of the time). It took me many years to find the courage to pursue composing with the ferocity it demands. I feel so lucky to be able to hear this piece evolve, and how surreal to be able to experience this in Berlin ❤️ Thank you @aretazhulla @violinard @mollycarrviola @astridcello for your daring, vulnerable, poetic playing…and what a special audience. I will never forget your Cavatina!

Chamber Music Pittsburgh celebrates Womens History Month by honoring the voices of femme artists and composers. Today we shine the spotlight on Michelle Barzel Ross, a Grammy Award-winning violinist, composer, and improviser, whose music-making has been hailed as "affecting" (The New Yorker), "gorgeous" (The New York Times), and "nobly shaped and impeccably sustained" (The San Francisco Chronicle). On March 30, the Juilliard String Quartet will be performing Michelle Barzel Ross’s Birds on the Moon, a piece that "leads the audience through an ever-shifting audioscape of melodic motifs, imitations of natural sounds and startling effects that are unexpected, yet familiar, as in a dream" (Spokane Spokesman-Review).

“little bells” premieres tonight in Philadelphia!!! This short quartet is inspired by the joy, sweet sadness and mystery which lingers in the ending of “le petit prince”. Commissioned by and written for @jasperquartet to celebrate their 20th season 💙💙💙 while I am sad not to be able to attend in person, I am extremely touched that this piece is being brought to life by such a beautiful, sensitive ensemble. I never imagined writing my third string quartet.. 🙏🏻💜✨
