Full circle moment alert! 🔄📊
Last week, we gathered our data collectors to reveal information from our fisheries dashboard in partnership with @_blueventures analyzing the trends from June to December. But this wasn’t just a regular training session - it was a handoff of the baton. 🙌
Starting today, the data collectors will hit the ground to do something incredible: they will be delivering this data to the BMU executive and assembly themselves, and we will be there to witness.
They'll be showcasing everything from BMU data-compliance rankings📊 to average catch weights and community income.
We used to lead these community sessions, but seeing our collectors step into the spotlight as data-driven leaders who can translate complex data🔍 into actionable insights for fishers and dealers is the ultimate win for the Blue Economy.
The future of fisheries management is local, empowered, and informed! 🌊📏

Building a sustainable future, one student at a time. 🤝
It was a privilege to hear from Mr. Said Baishe, Headteacher of Kipungani Primary School, about the long history👂 of conservation in his community. His insight is clear: for conservation to truly last, it must be rooted in education from a young age.
Mr. Baishe has seen many mangrove🌳 projects come and go, but he believes the most lasting impact doesn't come from just planting a tree—it comes from planting a seed of knowledge in a child’s mind. 🧠✨
When kids learn eco-farming and conservation early, they carry those values for a lifetime, no matter where they go. We are so proud to support this "pro-conservation spirit" in the next generation!

It takes a village to protect an ocean. 🌊🤝
Last year, Bahari Yetu Festival brought together over 500 community members, students, and volunteers from across the Lamu Archipelago to champion marine sustainability. Through 🎨 art, talent, and education, we are ensuring that the future of our fisheries and coral reefs is in good hands.
The countdown🧮 to this year's festival has officially begun! We invite partners, sponsors, and ocean lovers to join us as we make this year even bigger.
Whether you're a student, a fisher🎣, a conservationist, or just someone who loves the sea, there’s a place for you in this journey.

Garden goals at Bright Girls Secondary! 🥬✨
Last month, we visited Bright Girls Secondary School to support their thriving kitchen garden. Our team installed a shade net just in time for the 🌧️rains, ensuring their eco-farming project continues to flourish.
This project is more than just growing food; it’s about teaching 20 dedicated students👩🏫 the power of eco-farming and self-sustenance. Seeing their garden thrive is a testament to what happens when "kindness" meets "conservation."
A huge thank you to our long-standing partners at @tusk_org@tusk_next_gen for their unwavering support in making these community projects a reality. 🌍💙

What happens when protecting the ocean conflicts with putting food on the table?
In coastal communities, conservation is not always straightforward. For many, fishing🎣 is a matter of survival, yet unsustainable practices threaten the very ecosystems they depend on. From mangrove🌳 logging to unsustainable fishing gear, the challenges are real - but so is the hope.
Through community-led governance, @lamcot_lamu is working to find a balance - protecting marine resources while supporting long-term livelihoods.
Because conservation only works when it works for people.

From Awareness to Action: The New Era of Fishery Data 🐟📊
When Yasir Ahmed, Chairman of Matondoni BMU, shared this during our orientation session, it highlighted the core success of our training: motivation through understanding.
Data collection is no longer just a requirement; it has become a point of pride and a pillar of strong governance. Why Data Compliance Matters:
✨ Participatory Decision-Making: By understanding key data variables, fishers and traders are no longer just providers of information: they are active participants in managing their own resources.
✨ Transparency & Accountability: Proper recording in fisheries logbooks ensures that the wealth of the sea is tracked accurately, fostering trust within the BMU.
✨ Sustainable Livelihoods: Improved data allows for better planning and budgeting, ensuring that BMU resources are used accountably for the long-term benefit of the community.
Strong governance starts with reliable information. When leaders like Yasir foster an environment where fishers🎣 see the value in every entry made in a logbook, we move closer to a truly sustainable Blue Economy.
We are proud to support these leaders as they transition from the classroom to the shores, turning fisheries data log tools into instruments for community empowerment.

Reflecting on a Milestone for Lamu’s Blue Economy! 🌊📚
At the end of last month, we gathered with chairpersons of 10 BMUs across Lamu West for a 3-day orientation and launch event. The main aim was to equip our BMU leaders with the tools to lead with transparency, accountability, and data-driven insight. What we covered together:
🌀 Fisheries Data Mastery: We dove into the structure of new fisher and trader logbooks📓 to ensure our marine resources are managed with precision.
🌀 Financial Accountability: Leaders engaged in role-plays and practical sessions on budgeting, 💰revenue collection, and professional record-keeping.
🌀 Collaborative Governance: We explored how to hold effective meetings and the vital role each office bearer🗄️ plays in a successful BMU.
The energy was capped off by a keynote address from @nature_africa Oceans Director, Jeff Ardron, and the official launching of the financial management books and fisheries logbooks. ✂️🎀
The true success hasn't just been in the training, but in the action that followed - like seeing our BMU chairpersons supporting🤝 one another’s assembly meetings across the Lamu Bay JCMA. We are now looking forward to distributing these books in the villages.
A huge thank you to our partners who made this possible: @nature_org@kefisheries and the Lamu County Government. Together, we are making the wealth of the sea a reality for all! 🇰🇪🐟

From the shores of Lamu to the rolling hills of Rwanda! 🇰🇪✈️🇷🇼
We are beyond proud of our Conservation Education Officer, @fondo_jackson , who went on a 5-day exchange visit to Rwanda. Supported by @tusk_org and organised under the PACE program, Fondo joined forces with the @savingrwandawildlife to learn new ways to inspire the next generation of eco-warriors. 🌍🌱
From visiting the Grey Crowned Cranes at @umusambiv to seeing student-led composting and "Tippy Taps" in action, Fondo is returning with a notebook full of ideas to grow our programs here at LaMCoT. 📒✨
Between workshops on ethics and visiting innovative school gardens, the "RWCA spirit" is officially with us in Lamu. 🌿
🙏 A massive thank you to Tusk Trust for providing this incredible opportunity for our Environmental Educator to grow, learn, and bring global best practices back to our community.

"It is way easier that way."
These powerful words from Fardia, aFisheries Officer at @kefisheries , captured the heart of our community leaders.
Her call for collaboration🤝 reminds us that protecting Lamu’s marine resources isn't a job for just one person, one organization or one government agency - it’s a collective responsibility.
By bringing together: the Community, the Government and Conservation Partners we are building a foundation of accountability and sustainability that will last for generations.
Caring for our blue 🌊wealth becomes simple when we all play our part in our different capacities.

More than a partnership - a shared commitment to the people of Lamu 🌊🤝
We are proud to renew our partnership with @lamcot_lamu for 2026, continuing our support for the Kinyika Closure, a community-led initiative protecting both marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
This year, we are deepening our focus beyond conservation alone, recognising that healthy oceans are intrinsically linked to livelihoods, food security, and the lived realities of coastal communities across the Lamu Archipelago.
Our work together will focus on:
🔹 Strengthening governance: Empowering local leaders to be the ultimate stewards of their resources.
🔹 Fisheries Recovery: Ensuring long-term ocean health to support the "community shop" for generations to come.
🔹 Community Ownership: Building a future where conservation and people thrive in tandem.
Together, we aren't just protecting a coastline; we are securing a legacy.
