On May 31, an immersive concert experience at Walt Disney Concert Hall will calm the senses, lower the pulse and surround audiences in breathtaking music inspired by water and nature. It features the works of four renowned choral composers: former Master Chorale Swan Family Artist in Residence Reena Esmail, Marques L. A. Garrett, Hyowon Woo and former Artist in Residence Eric Whitacre.
Esmailâs music weaves together the traditions of Hindustani and Western classical music. Her extensive catalog of orchestral, choral and chamber music is performed regularly across the United States and around the world. Her gorgeous piece, âMalhaar: A Requiem for Water,â is a breathtaking and healing combination of music and visual design that is the centerpiece of Sound Waves, inspired by the climate crisis and ancient Hindustani ragas intended to summon rain.
Garrett â an accomplished composer, conductor, vocalist and educator, and Woo â a leading voice among Korean choral composers working internationally whose work brings together traditional Korean aesthetics and contemporary musical language with a distinctive voice, were commissioned by the Master Chorale to write new pieces that interact with Malhaar, which will both have their world premiere at the concert.
âWater Nightâ from beloved composer Eric Whitacre will also be performed, evoking a riverâs âsilent and beautiful current.â
The performance also features internationally acclaimed vocalist Saili Oak and a mesmerizing video installation by Camilla Tassi that will transform Walt Disney Concert Hall into a cocoon of light, motion and sound.
Itâs clearly a night not to be missed. Join us! Tickets available at lamasterchorale.org â¨đđś

A huge congratulations to composer Billy Childs on being named finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Music for âIn the Arms of the Beloved,â which was commissioned, premiered and recorded by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The recording, conducted by Grant Gershon and featuring our frequent collaborator Anne Akiko Meyers on violin, was also nominated for a Grammy Award earlier this year.
Described as âa powerfully expressive composition that unifies chamber music, jazz and choral music in a combination that speaks to Americaâs diverse musical traditions, offered as a way of carrying forward the spirit of our ancestors,â this piece conveys a universal message of hope and resilience.
41 high school choirs and a record-breaking number of singers filled Walt Disney Concert Hall for a full day of music on Friday that kept delivering.
The amazing @cindycellis joined Los Angeles Master Chorale Artistic Director Grant Gershon on stage, and the afternoon closed with a light show tribute to architect Frank Gehry that felt like the perfect ending to something truly special! â¨
