Sooo, this happened. It’s a very crazy story but, condensed…Mr. Denzel Washington leaves me a message via my agent a couple days ago. I thought it was fake because why?????
So, I finally call the number back and…ummm…it was him. He says he was so moved by @lamadrinadoc ’s story and how the film transported him back to his youth, spent on the same streets (he is from Mount Vernon but had a girlfriend on Southern Boulevard), that he felt compelled to call me.
The conversation, full of jewels and encouragement is one I will never forget because it was so hard, I shared, to make this film on my own terms…with so little Funderatti support…so hard…f— respectability politricks and reductive portraits…enough. Moving on.
Mr. Washington asked when I was seeing Lorine again. I said, “Well, it’s her spiritual bornday on Friday and it would be so cool—“ and that was that.
So, today, they spoke.
Maferefun #Chango. Lorine inspires. So. Many. People.
A big special shout-out to the one and only @jahearnart and his assistant extraordinaire Kevin for immortalizing our favorite #Bronx matriarch #LaMadrina Lorine Padilla.
