Before she was America’s Grandma, she was Dog Mom to the Stars
From 1971-1972, Betty White hosted The Pet Set. Each episode featured a celebrity guest, their pet(s), and animal experts. This included Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Burnett, Burt Reynolds, Merv Griffin, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Vincent Prince, and Mr. Spay-And-Neuter-Your-Pets Bob Barker. Many came with their dogs, but some brought cats and horses. Betty would also welcome an animal expert that would bring on rare animals, such as a lion, tiger, and elephant - oh my! She would also travel to wildlife sanctuaries and promote conservation.
She gave a platform for animal lovers while educating the public on how to pick the right puppy for your family, to never buy from puppy mills, and that exotic animals are not house pets.
I started watching for the cute animals, but quickly became enamored with Betty White hosting prowess. She asks insightful questions, keeps guest on topic, and her callbacks to previous conversations were so keen that it often went over the guest’s heads.
Betty White is one of the great comedians of all time. There’s a reason every single person who’s seen even a minute of Golden Girls loved her. She was That Girl and forever will be.
