If anyone asks me what's the Polish dreamy scene’s biggest gem to be discovered, I’ll always say it’s @r0savert0v . It can hardly be described how ethereally beautiful the Warsaw band's music is. Definitely one more focused on the dense atmosphere and slowcore pace than the melodies, but when the latter appear, they are absolute bangers (in the most dreamy sense) as in the gig’s last song, ”All We Have Must Be Enough”. And this description is even more apt for Rosa Vertov’s live performances. Slow and atmospheric, mesmerizing ceremonies that are not staged nor faked, the musicians just make their music this way. And it has to be stated that the three ladies definitely display the feminine element in their art, especially in the moments when all of them contribute to the vocals (some sung, some spoken, some only vocalised) to create the folk-like whispering chaos among the noisy music. But this element is also visible in the light work and even the merch table arrangement (they even sell their own perfume and it is gorgeous!). The Dream Psych Night, as the event was called, was opened by Gdynia-based @black.mynah led by Joanna Kucharska, a member of a handful of well-known bands from the Tricity area, including Kiev Office and Lonker See. Their music blends indie rock with some dreamy elements. I liked the parts with vocalisations and heavier synthwork more than the guitar-riff-heavy ones. But the whole night was mostly dedicated to the last band, Gdańsk’s @bazgrolki.band who had just released their new album “Przełamując fale” and wanted to share it with the world. It’s not a debut album, but the dramatic shift in their music style, from indie pop-rock songs into shoegazey, psychedelic feasts, says otherwise. Even the art style of the album covers couldn’t be any more different. And I love the change: their performance was both heavy and airy at the same time, the shoegazey walls of guitar sound, ethereal vocals and psychedelia-inspired trance-inducing passages couldn’t work any better. I will write more on “Przełamując fale” more soon.

Somehow @spoiwoband returned. The Gdańsk-based cinematic post-rock outfit reformed their lineup and got reborn last year and now they are back touring promoting their 2021’s 10/10 album “Martial Hearts”. I was so ready for this! And I have to say that the two gigs I went to: Katowice’s in @5domkatowice and Kraków’s in @klub_re could hardly be any better. The emotional spectrum of Spoiwo's synth-heavy instrumental music is exactly where I remembered it to be. The melancholia-driven, ethereal compositions that often sound more like dream pop than post-rock, have the ability to go straight into the listeners’ souls. It was clear how emotional the comeback was for Piotr, Patryk and Krzysztof and these emotions spread among the audience like wildfire, the color of which dominated the lighting spectacle too. The artists kept saying that they were happy to come back to doing what they love and fans, like me (and those who came to witness the rebirth from some far away places), have to reply: “we are so happy to go back to loving what you throw at us!” Spoiwo were joined by a range of fantastic artists: @november.might.be.fine proved that their blend of post-rock origins and sludgey metal inspirations works like charm live; @flowerandpines grow and grow every time I see them so their artsy mashup of post genres and poignant themes only gets better and better; while @joquailcello proved that she’s not only an extremely talented artist but also an absolutely lovely person. What a start of the tour for Spoiwo! Next week they play Łódź, Warszawa and Poznań, don’t miss them!

I’m always so happy when a post-rock concert manages to attract such crowds as the last GY!BE gig in Warsaw’s @klubprogresja . Well, is it still post-rock though? Is it still a concert though? Since my first time with GY!BE’s music live, I’ve viewed these events more as audio-visual spectacles with music of perfect quality and video content complimenting it, adding to the overall atmosphere. But truth be told, the visuals (videos + lighting) always look more or less the same. When I look back to the gig at AM Fest in 2022, I see more or less the same image: warm, theatre-like lights and moody, but not overly coherent videos behind the artists. In the end, I found it better to close my eyes and listen to the music. And the music is simply perfect: the cinematic post-rock with an orchestral-like line-up on the stage. They played a lot of the newest album which I enjoy a lot too. How can you have a better music experience? Especially that the HOPE message at the beginning is something we all desperately need these days. Especially that Ian Lynch and Ian Ó Loingsigh’s bagpipes-(pardon me if I mistook the instrument used…)-turning-into-drone project @one.leg.one.eye that played as a support turned out to be such a fantastic concept. The sound’s evolution from Her Name Is Calla-esque post-rocky folk music into a blissful noise was simply amazing. I’m always happy to see such crowds at a post-rock event, especially because a LOT of people in the audience were clearly younger than the band’s debut album. It makes me a little bit happier.
