Shh... Quiet please, machines are learning Conducting a metaphysical orchestra in Symphony No.4, composed with ML-audio generation trained on Armenian classical composer Avet Terterian’s Symphony No.3 and my own music. Created during a two-week @hosq.co residency in Yerevan, Armenia, and premiered at the Notations Festival, Arno Babajanyan Philharmonic, this series captures my early ML-audio experiments. Across these pieces, I exploited popular-music-biased models, testing their limits in generating new, unconventional sound through custom datasets and deliberate misuse. Shh… Quiet please, machines are learning (II) Another piece in my series grew from the trip to the abandoned Orgov Space Observatory in Armenia, where we recorded inside its massive, alien-acoustic antenna dish. This became the foundation for the AI-generated audio in ‘Antenna’, composed during a two-week @hosq.co lab and presented at the Notations Festival in Yerevan. The dish had a huge, mesmerizing reverb — we sang, screamed, tried Steve Reich’s Clapping Music, lowered a speaker inside on a rope and captured everything on dozens of recorders. I used these raw voices and claps of me, @simulya__kr and @fansplusvzhaowo , wrapped in surreal natural echo, as the sole training material for multiple ML-audio generations, later arranged into the final 10-minute track. What made me curious to approach this is that most AI models are still heavily biased by (often unethically) sourced popular music, which makes up the vast majority of their training data, so they typically fail to produce anything unusual. That helps me understand why many call it a creativity killer, even among my artist friends (hi). I believe it doesn’t have to be like that. If used right, ML, like any instrument, will be an extension of your imagination rather than a poor replacement, and this work is that for me. Still led by popular-music bias but now applied to obscure sounds, abstract structures and this alien space, it allowed me to create something that felt genuinely new and amazing to me, and it’s not easy to surprise me sonically.
