Hope Stutzman , 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 , Cast paper clay, 13.25” × 4.5” × 4.5 “ 2025
Inspired by traditional Catholic arm reliquaries from the medieval period, which traditionally house the bones of Saints, this work replaces religious symbology with referents to esoteria and secret orders.
Reliquary considers the relationship between objects, the material they are made of, and how their arrangement in space can point towards possible metaphysical forces interpreted through a religious, mystical, or art historical lens.
𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘥 continues thru Sept 20 at long play in Santa Monica. Gallery hours Thurs - Sat 1-5 also daily by appt . Come see !
So pleased that Long Play Contemporary has included two works-on-paper from my ‘Very well saint’ series in Thin as a Card. They were initially shown at The Drawing Center in 2000. The catalog for ‘Very well saint’ includes an essay by Beth Finch and an Artist Statement (image 8). My approach to and attitudes about artmaking remain consistent.

Ryan Zhao, 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘉𝘰𝘺, 2024. Polyethylene, nylon, concrete, metal, stone, PVC, ink. 27“ × 16.75“ × 19“ , 2024
Ryan Zhao’s (b.2000) sculptures elicit psychosexual dimensions to mass produced objects and images through various arrangements and installation methods. Her objects of interest are hardware and devices that support or harm the body, ranging from bike seats to doorknobs to leashes. Images that fascinate her are bodies in distress or under pressure, from a racing greyhound to a foot in a strappy heel. These objects and images that carry potentials of explosions or implosions are installed on windowsills, corners, or ceilings, to stage a freeze frame melodrama which the viewer’s movement activates, and new perceptions of everyday objects arise. Recent exhibitions this year include a group show at The Wolford house and at Long Play Contemporary.
