After more than 13 years in Austin Texas, my family and I are heading home.
Wednesday will be my last shift with AFD. I feel a lot of gratitude when I look back at my time with the Austin Fire Department. There are far too many people to name who played a role in shaping me into the firefighter and person I am today. I’ve been fortunate to spend most of my career working for, and alongside, what I truly believe are some of the best companies, firefighters, and officers in the city.
I’ve been surrounded by people who pushed me to keep learning, to keep working hard, and to keep standards high. Officers and peers who were confident but humble, proud of the job but never above it, and willing to show vulnerability while still maintaining expectations of high performance. I’ve always tried to put myself around people who were stronger, smarter, and more capable than me, and Austin gave me that time and time again. It has not always been easy, and has in fact been pretty difficult at times. But most things worth doing are. You all made me better. Thank you.
I started to make a list of everyone who impacted my career here. It was overwhelmingly long, and the more I wrote, the more i realized how difficult it was going to be. Impossible. The easy way out is to say that I’m a very lucky man.
Leaving is hard. Part of me feels like there was still more to do here and more work I was excited to keep putting in. But I feel resolved with this decision. This move brings our family back to our roots, closer to our extended family, and gives us more time together. There are plenty of unknowns ahead, including where exactly we will end up living.
I’m starting with a department I’ve long respected, working alongside people I’ve admired throughout my time in the fire service. Getting to go back to the back step is a privilege, and I’m eager to put in work. That opportunity means a lot to me, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
Hey friends…
I’m looking for some advice or recommendations on cross country movers / relocation services? It’s a wasteland online of both good and bad reviews, along with plenty plenty of scam concerns. Help!
Not interested in doing PODS, upack or PackRat for a number of reasons.
