15 years ago, I lead a project with @brandonlitman that made a film in every country of the world. It was a profoundly humbling experience. with the help of the United Nations dozens of nonprofits and over 10,000 people we created 3000 hours of footage that made a feature film that is still a one-of-a-kind world record of human collaboration. It’s a lesson that ideas are bigger than you are. If you water them, they can grow— thank you to everyone who participated back then and co-created.

Regeneration is a short dance film by Kyle Ruddick and Cristina Poindexter that pays homage to the capacity of the human psyche and spirit to metabolize destruction into full bloom.

Shot in the ashes of the Santa Monica Mountains in the weeks following the LA fires, the film captures a dancer amongst the desolate beauty of LA’s scorched terrain as she and it metabolize destruction back into full bloom–ecologically and emotively in parallel. Throughout, the patient eyes of more than 20 trail cameras document the slow return to life–grasses emerging from char, wildflowers erupting to superbloom, and wildlife feeding off a landscape more vibrant than before.
With an evocative soundtrack featuring GRAMMY-nominated artist and Topanga local RY X, Regeneration offers a meditation on cycles–of natural fire and regrowth, and of the natural emotive arc that regenerates the human spirit.
It is dedicated to all those who experienced loss in the LA fires, but also to all those who’ve regenerated themselves in the wildfires of their own lives. Ultimately, it serves to leave its viewers with a message of hope: when held with reverence, and given time, the destructive events that sweep through our lives might just be serving to bring us back to life.
