As Devon Kurdish Community, we came together in Exeter to celebrate Newroz 2026 , not just as an event, but as a powerful expression of our identity, culture, and unity.
It was a night full of emotion, pride, and togetherness. Through music, dance, and meaningful words, we didn’t just celebrate we connected, we remembered, and we stood stronger together.
Seeing our community come together with such passion and spirit made this night truly unforgettable. Moments like these remind us who we are and keep our culture alive wherever we are in the world.
We would like to sincerely thank all the speakers and singers who contributed to this meaningful night. Your voices, performances, and presence made this celebration special.
We also thank everyone who attended, supported, and stood with us.
Newroz is more than a celebration.
It is resistance.
It is renewal.
It is unity.

We were proud to take part in the International Women’s Festival 2026 in Exeter as the Devon Kurdish Community Woman Initiative.
Our stand brought a touch of Kurdish culture to the festival — with traditional food, colourful regional clothing, and handmade crafts that reflected the richness of our heritage. It was wonderful to see so many people stop by, connect with our culture, and share the atmosphere with us.
One of the most meaningful parts of the day was our documentary and short film screening, which received great interest from visitors. Through these screenings and conversations, we spoke about the history, development, and future of the Kurdish women’s movement — a story of resilience, courage, and ongoing struggle for equality and freedom.
Thank you to everyone who visited our stand, watched the screenings, and shared this space with us. Moments like these remind us how important it is to build bridges between cultures and amplify women’s voices together.

Every year, as always, we gather in Exeter to celebrate Newroz together.
The fire of Newroz has burned for centuries as a symbol of resistance, freedom and the enduring spirit of the Kurdish people.
Across Kurdistan and throughout the diaspora, it reminds us that no matter how difficult the struggle, our identity, culture and hope continue to live on.
At a time when unity among Kurds matters more than ever, Newroz reminds us that our strength lies in standing together.
Join us in Exeter, share the message, and celebrate with us.

On February 27th, we gathered in Exeter for a meaningful and powerful evening.
The event, “The Kurds: Roots and Resistance,” was thoughtfully organised by Exeter Labour. As representatives of the Kurdish community, we were honoured to be invited to speak and share our perspective.
We also had the privilege of sharing the stage with Exeter MP Steve Race. The venue was completely full — every seat taken — and the audience remained engaged from start to finish. The atmosphere reflected a genuine commitment to dialogue, diversity, and solidarity.
During our speech, we spoke openly about the Kurdish struggle across Rojava, Bakur, Başûr and Rojhilat. We also raised concerns about the current Labour government’s limited action regarding the situation in Kurdistan — particularly in Rojava, the Syrian part of Kurdistan. It was essential that these issues were brought into the room and heard directly by both the public and political decision-makers.
Events like this matter.
Visibility brings accountability.
Dialogue creates pressure.
Solidarity builds change.
Thank you to everyone who attended and stood with us.

Today in Exeter, we screened Belkî Sibe and honoured those recently martyred in Rojava.
Rojava and Rojhilat are facing coordinated attacks by authoritarian regimes and jihadist forces. What is being destroyed is a project built on women’s liberation, self-determination and coexistence. Figures like Jolani (al-Sharaa) and the Sharia-based politics he represents offer no freedom — only repression under a different flag.
This was not just a film screening, but a political stand. Silence only serves those who occupy, displace and erase.
Thanks to Radical Learning Exeter for co-organising and standing in solidarity.

Since January there has been a massive offensive against the Democratic Autonomous region of Rojava, in North-East Syria, by the new Syrian regime. While this conflict is currently subject to a ceasefire, the revolutionary moves forward for women and young people in the area - which have inspired radicals all over the world - remain at risk.
In this context we are excited to present a screening of the new documentary Belkî Sibê, alongside our friends @kurdishdevon . We will have a short introduction remembering the martyrs of the fighting in January, to whom we will dedicate the screening, followed by a Q&A afterwards. We also hope to make this a regular event going forward, so if you can't make it keep an eye out for our next event.
Film synopsis: Belki Sibe is a volunteer soldier's film. It unfolds an 18 month journey through war and revolution, in Rojava Kurdistan NE Syria, during the advance and victory of the Syrian Democratic Forces against ISIS, including the story of the International Freedom Battalion, where the director was primarily deployed. From Ruhollah Khomeini’s ideology to Abu Mohammad al-Jolani’s rule, the faces are different — the tyranny is the same.
One hides behind the state, the other behind militias.
One uses “law,” the other uses “Sharia.”
Both rule through fear, executions, prisons, and the silencing of an entire people.
In Rojhilat and Rojava, Kurds are not facing fate — they are facing organized oppression.
And they are resisting.
This resistance is not extremism.
It is the legitimate struggle of a people defending dignity, freedom, and the right to self-determination.
Silence is complicity. Neutrality sides with the oppressor.
Stand with the resistance.
Stand with the people.
Free Rojava. Free Rojhilat.

Today in Exeter, we took to the streets once again for Rojava and Rojhilat.
This was the second action in Exeter, and our message is clear:
We refuse to stay silent while Kurdish regions are under attack and repression continues.
Rojava represents democratic self-administration, women’s liberation, and coexistence.
Rojhilat represents a people facing systematic repression, executions, imprisonment, and denial of their basic rights.
Different borders, same oppression.
Different regions, same resistance.
Silence enables oppression.
Neutrality sides with the aggressor.
We call on the UK government, international institutions, and global powers to stop ignoring crimes against the Kurdish people, to end political complicity, and to take real action against those responsible.
We will continue to mobilize.
We will continue to resist.
And we will continue to stand with Rojava and Rojhilat — until justice, freedom, and dignity are secured.
