My name is Carlos Llavador Fernández. I was born in 1992, and my story with fencing began in 2000, when I was eight years old. It was not a planned decision nor a childhood dream; rather, it was a school trial at the Club de Sala de Armas de Madrid that sparked something unexpected. That first, almost casual contact marked the beginning of an adventure that is still ongoing today. At the age of fifteen, I was given my first major opportunity: I was selected to join the Community of Madrid’s foil team. Just one year later, I made the step up to the Spanish senior national fencing team. That same year, I took part in a World Championship for the first time, although still in the cadet category. It was my first glimpse of the demanding and revealing international level, and it made me realise that the journey ahead would be a long one. In 2010, I won my first senior national title, an important milestone that confirmed the work was worthwhile. Nevertheless, major international competitions were slow to come. It was not until 2011, at the World Championships in Catania, that I made my debut at my first major senior event. There, I understood that in high-performance sport nothing comes quickly: one must learn to persevere, to fail, and to continue. Together with my coach, Jesús Esperanza, I decided to move to Italy, to Frascati, in order to train at the Frascati Scherma club under the guidance of Maestro Fabio Galli, with whom I continue to work today. Changing countries meant stepping out of my comfort zone, but it was also an opportunity to grow, to understand fencing from a different perspective, and to push myself a little further every day.
Since then, some of the most significant moments of my career have followed: the bronze medal at the World Championships in Wuxi, participation in two Olympic Games — Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 — and my second continental medal in Genoa 2025, in addition to more than fifteen international medals
Me llamo Carlos Llavador Fernández. Nací en 1992 y mi historia con la esgrima comenzó en el año 2000, cuando tenía ocho años. No fue una decisión planificada ni un sueño de infancia: fue una prueba escolar en el Club de Sala de Armas de Madrid la que encendió una chispa inesperada. Ese primer contacto, casi casual, se convirtió en el inicio de una aventura que aún continúa.
Con quince años llegó mi primera gran oportunidad: fui seleccionado para formar parte del equipo de florete de la Comunidad de Madrid. Solo un año después, di el salto a la selección española de esgrima senior. Ese mismo año participé por primera vez en un Campeonato del Mundo, aunque todavía en categoría cadete. Fue un primer vistazo al nivel internacional, exigente y revelador, que me hizo entender que el camino iba a ser largo.
En 2010 conseguí mi primer título nacional senior, un paso importante que confirmó que el trabajo tenía sentido. Aun así, las grandes competiciones internacionales se hicieron esperar. No fue hasta 2011, en el Campeonato del Mundo de Catania, cuando debuté en mi primera gran cita absoluta. Allí comprendí que en el alto rendimiento no todo llega rápido: hay que aprender a insistir, a fallar y a seguir.
Los años siguientes fueron de crecimiento constante, hasta que en 2015 llegó un punto de inflexión. Ese año conseguí mis dos primeras medallas continentales, en las categorías U23 y Senior, ambas en la misma temporada. Ese resultado me empujó a tomar una de las decisiones más importantes de mi carrera.
Junto a mi entrenador Jesús Esperanza, decidí trasladarme a Italia, a Frascati, para entrenar en el club Frascati Scherma, bajo la dirección del maestro Fabio Galli, con quien sigo trabajando actualmente. Cambiar de país fue salir de la zona de confort, pero también fue una forma de crecer, de entender la esgrima desde otra perspectiva y de exigirme un poco más cada día.
Desde entonces han llegado algunos de los momentos más importantes de mi trayectoria: el bronce en el Campeonato del Mundo de Wuxi, la participación en dos Juegos Olímpicos, Tokio 2020 y París 2024, y mi segunda medalla continental en Génova 2025, además de más de quince medallas internacionales.
