Morning Son…..Abundance is plenty🌱
Been a push for the past few weeks, coming off the Merrie monarch high and even better seeing my moms concepts come alive at @bishopmuseum . Still more things in the works with #UmiOnSmith and @makaliimetrics
The days get wild sometimes to upkeep commitments, cultivate creative and birth new projects but even more so now the family nucleus is upmost. Dropping Loli’i at Kula, waving bye to the boy🥹, dinner date w/ @shaek 😘 and back home to do it all again🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
U M I O N S M I T H
It was an unimaginable idea back in 2016, to open a store only on Fridays.
At first, people always asked, “Why only Fridays?” Now, time has flown by, and we have made it to year 10. With the addition of Kaiao Space in 2019 and the ups and downs of the years that followed, we are still here. Mahalo to our ‘ohana, friends, and Chinatown for helping us build a community on Smith Street.
To honor this umi or ten years here, we are throwing a Smith Street block Pāʻina “UMI ON SMITH” spanning from Hotel to King St. Featuring live music! food vendors and a beer garden, this free event will be open to the public as a giveback to Honolulu for allowing Hilo to hold space in this community.
Mahalo to each and every one of you who has helped us get here!
Please join us on FRIDAY May 1st for special product releases in the morning at 10AM and the pā’ina with @chinatownsocialclub_ starting at 6PM!
Ea Mai ‘Eiwa: Patterns of Practice
April 18 - September 20 2026
Opening in the J. M. Long Gallery on Saturday, April18, 2026. This powerful new exhibition will feature the work of Nālani Kanakaʻole (1946–2026), Sig Zane, and Kūhaʻoʻīmaikalani Zane —a Hilo-based family of artists whose creative practices are deeplyrooted in hula ʻaihaʻa.*
As dedicated members of Hālau o Kekuhi in Keaukaha, Hawaiʻi, the artists’ work across visual and performing arts is continually charged and sustained by hula. From Nālani Kanakaʻole’s art direction and choreography to Sig Zane’s photography and textile design, and Kūhaʻoʻīmaikalani Zane’s graphic design and immersive installations, each artist channels ʻike (knowledge, wisdom) carried through generations.
Ea Mai ʻEiwa: Patterns of Practice will be presented in both Hawaiian and English, and will be on view from April 18 until Sept. 20, 2026. For more information, please visit BishopMuseum.org/Eiwa.
In addition to the three artists, the show was co- curated by Sarah Kuaiwa, Ph.D., Bishop Museum curator for Hawaiʻi and Pacific Cultural Resources, and co-curator Kumu hula Kauʻi Kanakaʻole, and designed by DeAnne Kennedy, Bishop Museum exhibit designer.
Exhibit merchandise will be available at Shop Pacifica by @nameahawaii from April 18th.
Legacy is a word we use so casually, as if it only begins after someone is gone.
But true legacy is deeper than memory.
It is the part of a soul that continues to breathe through the lives it touched.
Kumu Nālani Kanakaʻole left behind a foundation. A living pulse within Hawaiʻi, hula, culture, and the people she guided and the generations she awakened. 🗣️
Her life’s work was not measured in years, but in the roots she planted so deeply into the earth that they will continue to grow long after our time.
That is what legacy truly means: to live a life so full of purpose that even in absence, your presence remains. 🤍
Her voice, her ʻike, her spirit, and her love for her people will continue to echo through every chant, every step, every breath of the lāhui.
Some people are remembered. Others are never forgotten.
