Project description:
Coinciding with the Painted Worlds: Color and Culture in Mesoamerican Art exhibition currently on view at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mexican artist and scholar, Tatiana Falcon (Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) will lead a three-day workshop on the preparation of natural pigments following the ancient painter-scribe Nahua tradition in Mexico. This workshop will introduce participants to the history of pigment production in Mesoamerican art as it relates to materials, techniques, and cultural significance while also providing them with the opportunity to prepare their own pigments from natural vegetal material and animals sources and apply them to traditional mediums such as amate or bark paper. The workshop will be accompanied by a Monday evening presentation by Ms. Falcon, The Color of Life and Death.
General Participation: Individual or small group observer participants are welcome throughout the workshop days. Please be mindful that there may be moments that the workshop participants will be unable to answer questions. If you are interested in bringing your class, please reach out to Ryan Clasby ([email protected]) and Mary Anne Jordan ([email protected]) to see about accommodation.
