Talking to @trailblazingtalks_tv about what I see technology doing to bring more opportunities for more great diverse storytelling - despite the very real challenges we’re going through as we transition to our new reality. We will get there…and in the meantime we need to work quickly to build a new structure that will help bring this to life sooner.

She started at the bottom of the system she would eventually help reshape. Kirstine Stewart rose from an entry-level position at a Distribution Company through to Executive Vice President at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - and then she went on to become VP of Twitter North America! Few people understand media, tech, leadership, and reinvention at this level. Fewer still can articulate it. This is a masterclass in staying relevant — and staying real. Unmissable. It’s HER turn. 🎧 Link in Bio 👇🏼 Listen + subscribe 📲 Share with your community to help spread the message of hope! 💬 Comment “Kirstine” and we’ll DM you the full episode. I was once ranked #13 to Mark Carney’s #1 in a national magazine. My kid said: “oh. So. You’re not top 10?” Critics are everywhere 🤣. It’s important to take the wins when you can. I’ve been thinking about why so many of us feel overlooked. Not progressing. Passed over. Coz here’s the thing… We weren’t overlooked. We’re editing ourselves out. “I” becomes “we.” “Led” softens into “helped.” “Built” turns into “was part of.” It feels like humility. It can act like erasure. There’s a lifetime of conditioning that brings us to doing it. Despite the costs. But now’s the chance to make shift that puts you back into your own story. Link in the insta stories and bio, darling.

I learned this the hard way. I remember vividly a late-night text from a friend - someone I’d worked with before. The message was urgent, but not that important. Ofc I replied immediately. My BlackBerry was never far from reach. He called right away, laughing. “I’m sitting here with Tom. I bet him you’d answer right away, no matter what time I texted.” We both laughed some more, chatted a bit longer, and we hung up. I don’t think he meant anything by it, but suddenly, I felt embarrassed. Feeling betrayed by my own availability. Was my time considered that cheap? Had I been the one to devalue it ? For years, I told myself my worth was tied to my availability. Like at Hallmark Channel where I was running teams across multiple global time zones. It felt justified. If I missed the window, the day slipped. So I stayed on it. Constantly. I had a daughter, 4, a newborn 6 weeks old, and we were in a new city. Actually, a new country. It wasn’t easy. But I didn’t know how to extend the same high standard of care I had for others to myself - and my family. Something had to give. If, like me, you’re prone to constant availability, there comes a point when you have to ask: Are you truly behaving as a leader, or are you just a very very responsive boss? New Substack #linkinbio

I left a top job at a national broadcaster for a tech startup with 140 characters and an app. 5,000 employees down to 5. The office was a rented Regus space with tilted floors. I waited on the health plan. Had to bug Twitter HQ. “Oh. I thought healthcare was free up there in Canada.” They had a lot to learn. So did I. It was great. I never regretted it. New essay this week on I Hate to Tell You, Darling - on the three directions every career reaches at some point, and why the ground will not wait for you to make up your mind. Stay. Leave. Build. I had a conversation with Kirstine and asked a simple question: What do most women get wrong about building a business? Her answer made me pause. It wasn’t about strategy. It wasn’t about funding. It wasn’t even about ideas. It was this: The hesitation and the need for permission. The waiting for certainty before taking action. The need to be perfect before starting. And yet, business is rarely built in certainty. It’s built in motion. In imperfect steps. In decisions made before you feel fully ready. Because the truth is, wanting to be perfect before you start is often just another form of delay. And maybe that’s the real shift, not knowing more, but moving anyway.
