Mother’s Day celebration post to the lady who ushered me into this planetary adventure.
Mari. Mama. Mom. Mama Bear. Lela.
She’s kept this to mostly to herself, but my warrior of a mother has battled stage IV cancer for the past year and a half and came out on the other side cancer free.
20 years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, it came back as a cluster of tumors peppering her spine. As with most stories like this, it was a fight. She got radiation treatment that left her throat closed up for over a week. She couldn’t eat, drink, barely talk. But she got through that.
She got through so much in her life that could have kept others down. She doesn’t shy away from lessons, growth, pain, and experiences that elevate. She doesn’t get ‘past’ anything. She gets through them. With clarity and an open heart.
She’s taught me more about who I am, who I want to be, who I strive to be, simply because of her existing. She meets challenges with humor and smile. She doesn’t let pain define her. She sees every moment as an opportunity to go deeper into her spiritual journey. She craves meaningful conversations with strangers. She loves hard.
She doesn’t always get it right, but she’s real. We’ve not always seen eye to eye, but she never shuts down. And the older I get the more I understand and appreciate the flawed, imperfect, and radiant human she is.
Te quiero, mama.

•this tiktok landed me in KinKTok. That was… an interesting time. That’s all I’ll say on the matter.

Y’know it’s funny, oftentimes we look at the toughest challenges in an audit of the past year. And don’t get me wrong — those are the touchstones of growth, grit, and evolution. But these tiny, fleeting moments filled with faces and voices of your favorite beings on this planet (and some beyond) are the ones that stamp the soft parts. I hope when I’m on my deathbed, reels like this one fill my memory theater because I wouldn’t want it any other way.
