Heavy Spinner, oil on canvas, 100 x 115 cm. 2025. Black hole dolly eyes circle lenses binoculars at arms length, I can’t find my footing. I make a compass by placing a needle in the centre of a leaf and floating it in a pond. A cruise ship spins on a flash grenade and a giant sun disappears and I sit patiently looking for a line. The first material to become a compass was a very rare stone called a lodestone which is the only naturally occurring magnet. The running theory is that lodestone comes into being when a type of iron rich rock is struck by lightning. I drop my phone in the pond whilst trying to fact check my compass. The screen is blurred all green waves and spots.

For a few months I would see the same bird skimming over a pond. it looked a bit out of place; an angular, pointed iridescence that had travelled further north than usual. It would eat insects and rest at the top of a willow. Migrating birds are science fiction, they have a quantum mechanism In their eyes called a radical pair that is activated by sunlight and turns the earths magnetic field into a sensation. This is why birds often watch the sunset from the tops of trees. They are connected by a thread from the sun to the core of the earth and the courses they fly hold the world together. Bee-eater. I have been back home a lot this year, in the fens in east anglia, It’s a fragile, glassy place all apricot and straw and shimmers. I’ve been thinking about the fisherman I would walk past in the evenings. I never saw their faces. They would orbit the shoreline but always with the world behind them, tidally locked on a little stool. I couldn’t tell if they were scared to turn around or captivated by the setting sun. I wonder how long they will stay there. In 5 billion years the sun will start to cool and expand and for a brief time, its massiveness will completely and unavoidably fill their vision as a soft red fluorescence. — Fen (Red Giant Phase) III. My dad passed away a couple of weeks ago after a 6 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was an incredibly talented musician, a wonderful teacher and was always there if you needed help with something. He did mad things like moving our family to Spain on a hope and a prayer, trying to to restart the career of an obscure Eastern European pop star, and later in life attempting to grow giant vegetables using electromagnetism (which actually worked I’ve never seen such monstrous carrots) We spent a lot of time outside over the last months just listening to wind in trees and birdsong and insects waking up. It was so sad and strange to watch someone you love deteriorate like that and not be able to do anything meaningful to change their course and to sit with the feeling of endings and ticking clocks and holding hands and deep breaths. It was a privilege to help look after him, and to see so much kindness from so many people. 🤍 Clive Lock 05.08.1953 - 20.04.2025

ARTIST FOCUS: KRIS LOCK Kris Lock’s artworks are included in our current group exhibition ‘Realms’, curated by Gemma Rolls-Bentley. Kris Lock paints a new world that comes after this one. Resembling the digital landscapes of gaming worlds, the setting is uncanny in its familiarity viewed aslant. Presented through the aesthetics of ecological restoration, extinct creatures are reintroduced and thrive alongside other species – both real and imagined. The paintings speak to a hopeful new future built through regeneration and renewal. Artworks: Extending my solitude to you (2023) The moons very own lively plunge basin (2023) First person bee glider (2024)

I have some work in Realms - a lovely group show curated by @gemmarollsbentley  opening this Saturday 28th September @carlfreedmangallery  ! Very excited to show alongside @emmasteinkraus @georg.kitty @aprilbey_ @jessie_makinson @talilennox @tmdavy @leashojohnson2 @laurafootes ⁣ 📷 a detail from a new painting - ‘I am dangerous and blooming said the meadow to the stone bird’. I’ve been painting ophrys orchids recently, they evolved as a bee mimic with a furry labellum and blue / purple petals that mirror the iridescence of wings. To a human they look like little smiling beings waiting for a hug

📣 Save the date! @CarlFreedmanGallery are proud to announce Realms, an exhibition curated by @GemmaRollsBentley . Preview: Saturday 28th September, 5-8 pm. Free entry, all welcome. Exhibition runs: 29th September – 10th November 2024 A powerful and thought-provoking group exhibition created in collaboration with Gemma Rolls-Bentley, Realms invites you to journey beyond the confines of our reality to explore hidden stories and secret worlds envisioned by a group of nine international artists. Artists: April Bey, TM Davy, Laura Footes, Leasho Johnson, Tali Lennox, Kris Lock, Jessie Makinson, Emma Steinkraus, Georg Wilson Within these realms, new possibilities for life, love, liberation, and joy flourish, transcending the limitations of our current society. Through large scale paintings and installation, each artist reveals their unique vision of alternative realities. Whether rooted in reality and memory, or taking myth and folklore as a starting point, these artists’ journeys are united by boundless imagination and hopeful potential. From abundant landscapes to enchanted narratives the show offers glimpses into different dimensions where the barriers of conventionality fade away, and the spirit of exploration reigns supreme. “We seem to constantly be facing new challenges in our world today, with the most vulnerable in our communities experiencing hardship and discrimination, which ultimately affects everyone. I strongly believe that artists possess the power to help us navigate difficult times by creating space for us to consider different perspectives. The nine artists that I’ve brought together for Realms offer new worlds for us to explore that are full of optimism and liberation. My hope is that by exploring their worlds we can bring some of that magical energy back to this world as we work together to try and make it a better place for everyone.” – Gemma Rolls-Bentley (Guest Curator) Work details: Kris Lock Extending My Solitude To You 2024 Oil on board 92 x 122 cm @AprilBey_ @TMDavy @LauraFootes @LeashoJohnson2 @TaliLennox @KrisLock_ @Jessie_Makinson @EmmaSteinkraus @Georg.Kitty
