I think this is my favorite spread from Rosie’s Ranch Rescue! I just love doing close-ups and fur color/texture. When I sketched this, I was surprised that I wasn’t asked to make it “less scary” (no sharp teeth, etc). Usually if I draw anything remotely scary or sad, I’m asked to change it lol.

A little painting I did of my horse yesterday. 😚 I have an empty frame that is a strange 6” x 3.75” size, and I finally made something for it. Now I need to do my two dogs and cat!
I’ve been wanting to try a children’s book illustration style with traditional mediums for a long time. Those textures just can’t be beat.

Another spread from Rosie’s Ranch Rescue! This one features a fearful armadillo and know-it-all Thumbs the cat. Most of this book takes place at nighttime, and it was a bit challenging for me to get lighting and colors right for that setting. I tried to keep it decently colorful!

I’m so happy with how this book turned out, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it. Working on these books has been such a treat. 🫶
This book is about Oakley the cowgirl, Rosie the Clydesdale, Pete the dog, and Thumbs the cat protecting their ranch and calves from predatory critters in the night. It delivers a sweet message of how we, animals and humans alike, are just all trying to look after our own.
