We first performed this back in 2023, and it’s a pleasure to return to the love story of Ralph and Ursula Vaughan Williams. Wonderful long weekend in Los Angeles on the way back from NZ! @theabigailfiles was the best host. The Huntington library, museum and garden, a Pi Day Party (March 14 ie 3.14) and an outdoor movie screening, and then the LA vintage paperback market/convention. Great fun and great people. Bridging contemporary British lyricism and the cornerstone of the English song tradition, this recital is deeply intimate and evokes beauty through each piece. Opening with works by several living and recent British composers, this concert showcases the evolution and freshness of the British vocal tradition today. Including several modern melodic portraits alongside an array of songs by Ursula and Ralph Vaughan Williams, exploring their relationship in their own words, contemporary novelty and delicacy juxtapose romantic and prophetic intensity. Kieran Rayner brings the necessary "English baritone" gravitas required for the Vaughan Williams cycles and is joined by the highly versatile mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean to perform these songs with precise execution; Nigel Foster, a director of the London Song Festival, provides the authoritative pianistic foundation for this wide-ranging journey.
