#throwbackthursday - are we still doing that? well, in honour of #dementiaactionweek we are! Back in 2020, we had the privilege of working on a special resource alongside The Father - the critically acclaimed film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. Told through the perspective of a man living with dementia, the film powerfully places audiences inside the confusion, disorientation, and emotional reality of memory loss - not just for the individual experiencing it, but for the family members navigating it alongside them. Projects like this are such an important part of what we are about - creating resources, conversations, and spaces that help audiences engage more deeply with the themes explored beyond the screen itself. The film went on to receive six Academy Award nominations, winning Oscars for Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins also became the oldest-ever winner of a competitive acting Oscar at the age of 83. ❤️ #TheFather

Actress @sylvievarcoe plays Elli Kluge in Truth and Treason, a powerful new film that tells the true story of Helmuth Hubener, teenager who worked with two friends to spread the truth about the fascist regime in WWII Germany in the city of Hamburg. He had access to a banned radio through which he would listen to BBC broadcasts to German citizens. He’d then type these out on a typewriter and covertly distribute these around the city in the dead of night. A truly incredible and tragic story of a very brave boy. One thing that opens Helmuth’s eyes to the truth is his access to the banned literature in the archive where he works. So I asked actress Sylvie Varcoe, who is studying English literature at university, what book changed her worldview that she thinks everyone needs to read. Hint: this book is banned in some countries. What book do you think everyone needs to read? Is this a safe space? Can I be truthful here... • Last night I was sat on the front row of a movie that brought me to tears (had to hold myself together because we had work to do). It was the screening of ‘Truth and Treason’. • I will not be able to express even half the thoughts and feelings I felt during this night, but I will say that this story truly moved me. • The cast and crew were incredible at bringing the Story of a very brave 16 year old boy amidst WWII to life. His bravery is something to be learned from and applied. It was a harsh reminder that truth does not require a safe space, it requires a bold person. • For anyone that finds themselves in mental battle between doing what is right vs doing what is comfortable, this movie will truly speak in many ways.
