Due Studio, Mutaforma, January 2025 Published in the “Esercizi di Stile” column across the two central pages of Grafica Magazine No. 3. Our Esercizi di Stile piece speaks about graphic design and about us—our way of conceiving design, the boundless territory we explore every day, double readings, and the fluidity of an open message waiting to be discovered. Two opposites, black and white; two scorpions that seem to clash but perhaps instead meet. Are they scorpions, or lines branching out into space? They are connections held in balance: a mirrored composition made of equals and opposites that together generate third meanings. Rhythm, repetition, solids and voids alternate within a composition that, although apparently silent—and therefore devoid of any textual element—shouts our manifesto. A sense of wonder emerges from a deliberately slow, contradictory, yet also disruptive and disorienting reading. Uccidi la lettera ISIA U x Due Studio 03–05.12.24 Workshop on typographic destruction as a generative act for new abstract forms of writing A more experimental and less conventional approach to teaching can stimulate curiosity toward “unknown territories”, spaces where one can become a protagonist, define new rules, and discover unexpected results. This type of knowledge arises from direct action and trial-and-error processes, where there are neither mistakes nor definitive solutions. It’s about destroying in order to rebuild, about exploring typographic anatomy through de-construction. What can an A become if it’s cut up and reassembled into a new form? Is this new form still recognizable as an A? What may seem like a playful activity of destruction and recomposition is, in fact, a method of analyzing typographic anatomy and a form of free experimentation. The amount of black, the broken lines, the curves, the filled and empty spaces are all overturned, acquiring new visual meanings. #SenzaSegnale is a participatory journalism project that aims to reconnect the territories that have been forgotten by the media industry. This project tells about four territories, and four resistant communities, and does so by involving the communities themselves in the construction of the story, starting from the territories. #SenzaSegnale is a project by IrpiMedia in collaboration with Dotz Media, set up to amplify the voices of information professionals from marginalised groups, Il Centro di Giornalismo Permanente, a collective set up by former students of the Lelio Basso school of journalism, Fada, a collective of journalists experienced in reporting and working with local communities, and Indip, an independent periodical of enquiry in Sardinia. #SenzaSegnale tells its story with these grains of sand, reconstructing and reconnecting with words, photographs, illustrations, audio and video. NEW RELEASE 🌀 Plat Mono is a modern and rational monospaced typeface, available in 4 styles (Light, Regular, Bold and Ultrabold). With a large x-height and sharp terminals, its construction uses monolinear geometric modules that repeat uniformly within a pre-established parametric system. Glyph heights, stroke widths, overshoots values as well as spacing are based on a grid of 10 unites. The extreme approach to the geometry of the typeface becomes apparent as its typographical weight increases. Increasing in value up to Ultrabold weight there are some collisions between stems and strokes. This generate black spots in some glyphs which stress the concept of the letter, moving them more towards the shape and adding tension within the type composition. Plat Mono offers a range of stylistic sets which allow, even by mixing them together, to generate different graphic outputs. From the set which removes the slab serifs giving the typeface a more grotesk appeal, to that of the perfectly circular bowls in the lowercase, to the semi-mono set which uses wider capital letters (C, G, M, O, Q, W) that more closely match their original anatomies. All these characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of uses, from purely body text use in its smaller weights (Light and Regular) to a more display use in the larger weights, especially the Ultrabold.
