Bastet was an Egyptian goddess worshipped for 3,000 years. Originally depicted as a fierce lion headed woman, she transformed over the ages into a gentler deity associated with nurturing and domesticity and usually appeared as a cat.
Ancient Egypt was a patriarchal society but women had legal rights and social standing that surpassed the other empires of the time. Egyptian women lost much of their standing under the Greek and then Roman Empire, which then declined even further under monotheism.
