TRUTH BOMB 💣We speak to MANY natural winemakers and a question we ask a lot is… how often does making wine without sulphites go WRONG? 😶‍🌫️And the answer is quite often things turn out very bad. Some well known winemakers have told us to expect 10-15% loss each year in the pursuit of greatness - a wine without added sulphites. And the reality is, whilst the winemakers and many winelovers prefer this, the purity, energy and vibrancy of a wine without additions. there is a ALSO cost to it when it does not work out , and the faulty wine has to be sold for other uses beyond the winery, or disposed of. Here Maria of @koppitschwine explains the reality of how adding sulphites can kill off the risk of Mouse and extreme Volatile Acidity. Interestingly its worth noting that Mouse is still not fully understood, and there are reports it is now showing up in conventional wines with lots of addrd sulphites too, and Volatile Acidity is also on the rise in certain regions too leading to researchers and investigators being hired to understand the causes…. Could this be a climate issue? 🤔

In Neusiedl am See wird seit über 500 Jahren Wein gemacht – aber nicht so wie hier. Alex und Maria Koppitsch führen die Familientradition mit Respekt und Radikalität fort. Biodynamie wird barfuß praktiziert: keine Traktoren, keine Spritzgeräte – Alex marschiert sieben Stunden durch die Weingärten und bringt Präparate per Hand und Gehmeditation aus. Auf 5,8 ha Eigenbesitz bauen sie alles selbst an – keine Traubenzukäufe. „Das ist unser Boden – und unsere Verantwortung“, sagt Maria. Biodynamisch seit 2006, sehen sie Bio als Mindeststandard. Für sie entscheidet der Boden – nicht die Rebsorte. Daher arbeiten sie fast ausschließlich mit Cuvées, um die Landschaft statt den Lehrplan zu vinifizieren. Böden wie Sand, Lehm, Schiefer oder Kalk erzählen sich in Linien wie „a quiet soft light“, „Aeon“ oder „Homok“. Introducing Alex & Maria Koppitsch! A family winery with a 500-year history. Marie and Alexander started in 2011 when they took over the vineyards from their parents and went straight to the natural regime. (Until then, the parents had rather resold the grapes to other winemakers). They do everything themselves. They try to involve as few machines as possible in every step of the process. They farm 6 hectares of vineyards. Alex works in the vineyard and Marie takes care of the business. The wines are completely free of anything extra, nature itself. Very energetic, spontaneous wines. Exactly the way we like them :) Cz- Představujeme Alexe a Marii Koppitsch! Rodinné vinařství s pětisetletou historií. Marie a Alexander začali v roce 2011, kdy převzali vinice po rodičích a hned se vydali cestou přírodního vinařství. (Do té doby rodina spíše hrozny prodávala jiným vinařům.) Všechno dělají sami. Snaží se zapojit co nejméně strojů do každého kroku celého procesu. Obhospodařují 6 hektarů vinic – Alex se stará o vinohrad a Marie o chod vinařství. Jejich vína jsou zcela bez jakýchkoli přísad – čistá příroda. Velmi energická, spontánní vína. In the small Austrian village of Neusiedl am See, Maria and Alex Koppitsch carry on a family tradition dating back to 1523. Surrounded by vines from childhood, Alex and Maria took over six hectares from his grandfather in 2011—who, out of stubbornness and thrift, never used chemicals. That choice paved the way for their natural, biodynamic winemaking. Now, a decade into their project and parents of three, the Koppitschs pour love and dedication into every bottle: no fining, no filtration, no sulfur—just wines made to bring people joy. Their playful labels reflect the bright, layered character inside each glass. We currently have three of their cuvées in stock, including Touch, a stunning white blend from a vineyard planted in 1934.
