In 2021 I had an idea for a song. I was going through issues in my then relationship so I wanted to express it musically. Being a DJ, I’m always listening for new sounds and vibes. While the world was locked down, my mind and ears were exploring the globe. I came across a new genre of music that was exploding in Africa called “Amapiano”. It had sort of an Afrobeat/ house/ jazz vibe to it.
I quickly began working on producing a track with my interpolation of the sound. Once the music was done, I began the search for a vocalist to complement my idea. I landed on the sultry vocals of an artist named Doroh Kendy who lives in the country of Kenya in the capital city of Nairobi. I reached out to her and we began the process. Due to the time zone difference, it took a few months to complete the song as we sent emails back and forth. The finished product came out amazing. I loved the song so much that I wanted to shoot a video for it. This was not an easy task being that we both lived on different continents and international travel was still restricted in parts of the world.
Long story short and 8 months later, I can confidently say we made history. Never in Hiphop has a Dj/Producer/ Artist out of Philly created an international song with an Artist out of Kenya who is singing in Swahili and English. Never has there been a video shot in Kenya by a Philly Artist where I funded the project from videographers, dancers, wardrobe, set design, editing and promotion.
Moral of the story, NEVER STOP BEING CREATIVE! Dreams Don’t Die, they live in the field of consciousness until you manifest them into physical form.
