The painting is a conceptual exploration of the interaction between the human body and machines. She is immersed in the sahara desert covered in snow in reference to climate change.
There is an exchange between technology and the biological make up of the woman through the machine parts fused to her head expressing the complexity of thought and planning.
The painting seeks to investigate the role machines play in our lives and the beauty of the human form.

In honour of Womenâs History Month and the UN resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as one the gravest crimes against humanity, I would like to shed light on the story of Marie Joseph Angelique.
Title: Angelique: Torture and Testimony
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 30in x 36in
Date: 2026

She was born in Madeira in 1705 and was enslaved to a French businessman from Montreal. She was forced to have three children who all died in infancy, with a black enslaved man from Madagascar called Jacques Cesar depicted in the painting on the far left. By 1733, she was in a romantic relationship with a white indentured servant, Claude Thibault, who was employed in the same household. Angelique and Thibault are shown in a tender embrace in the centre of the painting. Following the death of her slave master later that year, ownership of Angelique passed to his widow, Mme. De Francheville. In 1734, she was accused of starting a fire that burned down half of the buildings in Old Montreal and was tortured until she confessed, then sentenced to death. The transcript of Angeliqueâs trial can be seen as the first slave narrative in the New World. She is revered as an immortal avatar of liberation, an active rebel, an exceptional, outspoken, independent-minded woman who fought for her freedom and her life with courage and wit, against formidable odds. #art #history #womenshistorymonth #unitednations #afrofuturism

Description: The painting depicts the iconic singer Sharon Marley in a state of metamorphosis, change and reclamation. Her afro is partly comprised of hair, shrubs, and palm leaves. Inside the Afro, there is a scene of a towering tree in the fall, perched at the edge of a cliff that seems to float in a cosmic void. Inside the mountain, a chrysalis of light dangles, softly pulsing with energy, and transforms into a waterfall. In her neck is an intricate maze of roots beaming with electricity, signifying the multilayered nature of her voice. The first rays of a newborn sun rise in the background across a night sky full of stars and musical notes symbolizing the infinite possibilities of rebirth. Monarch butterflies encircle flowers growing from her hair, inspired by the process of growth and the blooming of ideas. On her shoulder sits a fiery metaphysical phoenix with its wings open in preparation for flight.

This February, weâve brought you poems on musicâpairing poets and artists for #BlackHistoryMonth.
Our #PoemoftheWeek is âDo the Backseat Jam!â by Douglas Kearney, from đđđ¤ (Wave Books), winner of the 2022 Griffin Poetry Prize.
đ Read the full poem on our website.
The judges, who praised đđđ¤ for being "the crowning achievement of Kearneyâs body of work to date," said:
âđđđ¤ is Douglas Kearneyâs genius, vulnerability, and virtuosity on full display. These poems live in the rhythms of negotiation and navigation, at the root of saying . . . This is work that even on the page, refuses the page with its âperformative typography.â Always playful, forever in dialogue, Kearneyâs poems come at being from all sides."
