Stefan D. Wellanschitz introduces Kolfok: Our winery dates back to the early 19th century, when Burgenland was still part of Hungary. Today, the region lies at Austria’s eastern border and stands apart from other wine regions due to its unique character. Neckenmarkt, located in the Ödenburger Valley, sits at relatively high altitudes with vineyards reaching up to 500 meters above sea level. Here, alpine soils meet the Pannonian climate. The higher sites are defined by schist, gneiss, and limestone, while the lower vineyards consist of iron-rich loam and volcanic clay. These exceptional conditions shape our wines. We work organically in the vineyards, encouraging biodiversity by growing vines alongside herbs and other plants. In the cellar, we follow a minimalist approach: the wine flows by gravity into large local oak casks (600–1200 liters), where it ferments spontaneously and matures without fining or movement. We bottle unfiltered, using only minimal sulfur. #borett #borettwines #naturalwine #organicwine #craftwine #vineyardlife #sustainablewine #wineculture #winecommunity #winepassion #livingthedream #winemaking #finewine #winegeek #wineenthusiast #wineoclock

That‘s how labels look after work is done by Austrian wine law - one of the strictest, with new orders year by year and a mess of bureaucracy. Don‘t worry, the wine is fine and definitively one of the greatest Blaufränkisch vintages so far, just a few letters are wrong on this strict law. Please enjoy the wine and maybe forget about the blacked words on the label - cheers :) btw.: i used this label since 2012, but suddenly, 2026 it is not allowed anymore - magic happens…

Neckenmarkt. The Ödenburger Valley, as one of the last remaining parts of the Alps in the east gives us the very special Terroir of our soils. It‘s quite rare to have so many different soils types within one village - from shist, granit and slate, to limestime, chalk, sand, clay, loam and even vulcanic structures. Also the fact, that those vineyards are relatively higher (450 meter a.s.) located then most of the others in Burgenland, allows unique styles of different varieties. There have been vineyards not only for a few hundred years - for thousand years, because it was always just perfectly to grow vines here. :) Nowadays the vineyards become less, people are struggling with low wine prices and too much wine from new planted vineyards in places where it’s much easier to work. I really hope we can still see such beautiful landscapes like those in the future….
