Local community challenge to consider solving for the Based Africa Buildathon
Meet Amara, a 28-year-old entrepreneur from Nairobi, Kenya.
Amara has a thriving small business selling handmade crafts, but she’s struggling to expand due to lack of access to credit. Despite her responsible financial habits, she’s been denied loans and mortgages because she has no credit history.
“I feel invisible,” Amara says. “I’ve worked hard to build my business, but the system doesn’t see me. No credit means no loans, no growth, and no future.”
Amara’s story isn’t unique. Millions in developing economies face similar challenges, shut out of financial opportunities due to an outdated system.
“The system is broken,” Amara says. “It’s not about being irresponsible; it’s about being unseen.”
With no credit history, Amara’s dreams are on hold:
• Expanding her business
• Buying a home for her family
• Investing in education
