Itâs no secret that as you get older Tricking gets much MUCH harder⌠But that doesnât mean you canât keep enjoying it, keep improving and feel great! It does take a lot of effort and organisation though. Hereâs some simple tips that have really helped me to continue enjoying pain-free Tricking in my 30s:
1. TRACK YOUR SESSION VOLUME! Filming everything you do is a great tool for this as you can keep track of exactly how much you do in a session. The right amount of combos/tricks really depends on your fitness & Tricking level but once you start tracking it you can start making changes to avoid excessive soreness. Personally, I used to do 60-80 passes per session but now I aim for 40. Whenever I get carried away and do too much then I can feel destroyed for a whole week rather than just a little soreness the next day.
2. LEAVE THE SLAMS AND BAD LANDINGS IN YOUR 20s. Itâs not easy to have entire sessions without falling but it is possible once you humble yourself and slowly advance through progressions when youâre truly ready. Sure it makes learning new movements take longer but itâll lead to more progression in the long run as long recovery times and a high risk of injury will slow you down much more than taking a few extra sessions to progress to that next step.
3. MAKE YOUR CONDITIONING SPORT SPECIFIC! Being older means longer recovery times and more responsibilities. This doesnât mean you canât progress it just means you need to be efficient with your time and energy. Your conditioning should be highly specialised for Tricking and your specific weaknesses. Time spent and fatigue accumulated through heavy lifts that donât benefit your Tricking could be spent on something that does.
Thereâs a lot more to say about this topic that doesnât fit in a caption but I hope this helps! đ§Ş

STRUGGLING WITH BTWIST? đŽâđ¨
This drill is a gamechanger! Instead of having to think about all the details at once this drill will FORCE you to:
- Swing your chest through a big range of motion
- Lift your chest in the take off
- Engage your left hip (right for right twisters)
- Keep tension from take off to landing
All of these things are crucial for an easy Btwist and this drill simply wonât work out them đ§Ş

FLEXIBILITY IS KEY đ
Hip positioning through your take off is without a doubt the most important part of gainer switches. If your hips donât move through a big enough range of motion at the right time in the take off you physically canât:
- Rebound from your plant leg
- Arch your back right from the ground
- Maintain momentum between swings
Getting that correct hip motion in the take off is much harder if youâre close to the limit of what your flexibility level allows.
If youâre at the level of swingthroughs or beyond and want to accelerate your progress DM me about private coaching đ§Ş

Some tough twisting moves from Friday, nice to check in on the hard moves to see that they're still there!
Tricking is so broad and all encompassing, it makes it hard to properly hone everything that I wanna all the time, but that is why I even fell in love with it in the first place and it continues to push me as much as it does. There's always so much to do.
Learn how I approach twisting with @kojostricklab
I have a whole video tutorial of how I learnt to break down twisting on trampoline and translate that same technique to the floor!

WHICH IS BETTER? đ¤âŹď¸
These are a few of the pros and cons of each from my perspective:
Open bracket pros:
- Anyone can win a championship if they can make it to an event and perform well enough
- Audience excitement is built as a bracket progresses producing iconic memorable finals
- The very best trickers are guaranteed to meet each other and battle at some point in the bracket
Open bracket cons:
- The best match ups happen later in the brackets when the athletes are more fatigued
- Trickers have to preserve energy for later battles rather than just going all out
- Open brackets can take a long time and often include one sided and low level match ups which arenât exciting for the audience
Matchmaking pros:
- Title matches are much easier to promote as you know who will be competing
- Trickers can go all out straight away as they donât need to preserve energy for later rounds
- Every battle can be exciting if match ups are selected correctly
Matchmaking cons:
- Championships cannot be won through raw skill. This system creates gatekeepers who decides what opportunities trickers recieve. This can be heavily influenced by personal bias especially if there isnât a clear publicly disclosed system for how match ups are selected
- Far fewer elite level Tricking battles will happen each year
- We may never see the current top two trickers compete against each other while they are in their prime as this must go through a gatekeeper. Open brackets make these match ups inevitable
Comment any pros or cons that I missed!

Can you think of a more impactful new trick? đ¤
In 2019 @shosei_iwamoto invented the MacaronâŚ
This trick opened the floodgates for a whole world of new psuedo double flips and had a huge impact on Tricking as a whole. But was it the most revolutionary?

This is why⌠âŹď¸
Spotting over your shoulder in the take off helps a lot with underflipping issues:
- Youâll drop your shoulder sooner allowing you flip around a lower centre of gravity. This means your legs and hips donât have to travel as far so youâll get to your landing faster đŞď¸
- It allows you to swing your right arm (if you twist left) diagonally downwards in your take off. This gives you more flipping momentum đ¨
- Youâll have a smaller blind spot in the trick which increases control and confidence in the movement đĽ
