Cinematography Tip of the Day: The Hat Trick. Hi-hats and low-hats exist for one reason: to get the camera where tripods physically can’t. But what if instead of carrying two separate pieces of equipment, you could go higher than a traditional hi-hat and lower than a traditional low-hat all in one compact system?
ASC cinematographer @shanehurlbutasc and Local 80 Key Grip @ihavethedinero break down a camera support designed to replace both traditional hi-hats and low-hats. In this clip, they show how the Hat Trick lets you get extremely low, go higher when needed, and quickly level and reposition the camera without needing to move the system to another piece of equipment.
