Playoff series usually get remembered through the stars and the big moments, but most of the series is really just a long sequence of matchups and adjustments. Who got the primary assignment, who teams kept trying to switch onto, who handled the ball the most, who created offense against pressure, and who started forcing mistakes as the series went on. This post is built around the matchup data from the series itself. Not overall playoff numbers, but what happened when specific defenders were the closest matchup on possessions involving Brunson, Hart, Bridges, McBride, KAT, Maxey, Paul George, Oubre, Embiid and Edgecombe. The numbers here are a little different from normal box score stats because they come from NBA tracking data. Defensive possessions in matchup tracking aren’t counted as perfectly clean one-on-one possessions. Switches, doubles, late contests and cross-matches all get folded into the data, which is why the possession totals aren’t always whole numbers. The goal is less about saying one defender ā€œlocked upā€ another player and more about showing who saw the toughest assignments most often, who produced efficiently in those matchups, and which players were creating or losing possessions within the flow of the series. That’s also why possessions matter alongside the raw production. A defender seeing someone for a huge portion of the series is carrying a completely different workload than somebody picking up a few late-clock switches here and there. Efficiency changes when the matchup burden changes. Turnovers change when pressure changes. Assist numbers change depending on how aggressively defenses are helping. The interesting part about playoff basketball is how quickly every possession becomes specific. By the middle of a series, both teams already know who they want involved, who they want to avoid, and where they think the weak point is. These matchup numbers are basically a snapshot of that chess match across the series. #nba #nbaplayoffs #newyorkknicks #knicks #76ers
