In this episode of KMUN's Beach Grass Roots, we talk with South Pacific County Humane Society, which provides a no-kill shelter for animals and pays for medical supplies and costs. Listen at /series/beachgrassroots/ South Pacific County Humane Society is the beneficiary of the Astoria Co-op’s Change for Community program, which asks customers to round up their total as a donation to a different local nonprofit each month. KMUN has been proudly people-powered since 1983! And an important part of KMUN’s mission is “to enrich life by illuminating the role of the arts.” As technology advances, we have had to put together clear guidelines as to how KMUN will coexist with AI without detracting from this mission. For those that are curious, here is where we stand: - We are committed to keeping KMUN a respite from algorithms and artificial intelligence. - What the community sees and hears from KMUN should be the product of human creativity. - We have asked KMUN programmers to not use "generative AI" elements (typing words into a box to create sounds, images or videos) on their program or to promote it. - KMUN is to be preserved as a voice of and for our community, and as a proponent of the arts. As director-General of UNESCO, Khaled El-Enany put it: “Let us ensure that AI serves the public — and not the other way around. Let us ensure that radio continues to inform with integrity, connect with empathy, and speak with a human voice." KMUN is pleased to welcome two new staff members! 📀 Matt Butler is KMUN's new Program Director. After years of roaming town to town, up and down the dial, Matt is thrilled to have found home in the Pacific Northwest. Falling in love with radio and music in his youth, Matt has held roles as a DJ, producer, program director and editor, and still thinks radio is magical with an unlimited capacity to surprise, delight and enlighten. Outside of media, Matt enjoys craft ciders, travel (especially via rail) collecting Lego, and continually adding to his collection of band t-shirts. 📀 Ava Berardi is KMUN's new News Host & Production Assistant. Ava has been volunteering in community and college radio for the last five years. After graduating from Ithaca College in May 2025, they are psyched to find a home in Clatsop County (and to have time for hobbies again)! Some of their interests include cooking, yoga and burning personalized CDs. Please join us in warmly welcoming them aboard!

KMUN is pleased to welcome back the archives of Loafer's Glory with Utah Phillips every Saturday morning from 9-10AM. Loafer's Glory is a legendary collage of rants, poetry, tales, and little known music that was broadcast live from community radio station KVMR in Nevada City, CA. In the words of host Utah Phillips (RIP) he describes the show's offerings as such: "As I courageously plow through miles of tapes, mountains of CDs, LPs and old 78s, I offer music known and unknown and years of sheer recollection delicately hammered together into a one-hour weekly radio show. Songs and stories from Mickey Katz to Mongolian horsemen, war and peace, tramping...all or most of it proving once again that no matter how long I vacuum, the bag is never full." Please note, this program will be replacing The Martha Bassett Show.
