it’s moments like these you re-type a thousand times over. she was in so much pain. the SSDI couldn’t keep pace with the bills. she buried her pain just as an insurance agent buries his morals. she didn’t want to be defined as a lesser person, so she stayed silent. i need to tell her truth. this woman passed up a full ride to med school just to get into the field quicker as a nurse. healing other people was in her bones. her only child wants to cry out for her. the adult version of that child is going to be her microphone. she showed me how to survive against all odds. the world is going to know Cathy’s story. this photo is one of the only portraits she posed for, in Detroit, for her kid that’s going places. ...let your dad know he’ll get his coat back when i croak. September 21st, 1961 - January 4th, 2025 time of death: 12:02pm EST. 💔

yesterday at Wayne State University, students and protesters gathered at the intersection of Woodward & Warren for a rally, march, and encampment deployment. Students for Justice in Palestine - Wayne State University (@sjpwsu ) organized this march and action. Other local organizations came out to support. Over 150 began marching through the midtown / Wayne State area, weaving in and out of campus on the surrounding streets. Eventually, the march concluded in the center of Gullen Mall at Wayne State University. Suddenly, about 20-30 students, alumni, and protesters dashed over to the lawn area where a flurry of tents were rapidly erected. The remainder of students formed a moving picket circle, surrounding (and blocking the view of) the students putting up the tents. After 15-20 minutes, most tents were up, and signage was being placed around the newly-founded encampment. A perimeter string, similar to the @safeumich UofM encampment, was placed around the perimeter by protesters to mark its boundaries. Some loose pallets and barricades were added. Food began being served, prayer occurred, and the demands were read aloud by @sjpwsu organizers. Some left the encampment as night approached, but many stayed the night and plan to continue staying at the encampment until all demands are met. cc: @metrotimes // 05.23.2024

yesterday afternoon, protesters gathered around ‘the fist’ in downtown Detroit to protest President Joe Biden’s NAACP Detroit Branch’s 69th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner. After word had spread of two alleged arrests outside of the fundraiser, those at the fist began making their way towards the Huntington Center where the Freedom Fund Dinner was taking place. The crowd began to swell at the northwest corner of Washington Blvd & Larned St. Detroit Police began placing additional barriers to the north, intersecting the sidewalk. A protester, Taj, was grabbed by Detroit Police and thrown to the ground, then was arrested for “failure to obey a lawful order.” Taj maintains that they were standing behind the barricade, which DPD alleged to him that he wasn’t. Taj was behind the barrier when he was grabbed, seen in video I was shown by him later on that night. The protest was then warned of a loitering violation by DPD, the protesters began marching within the barricaded sidewalk as guests attending the dinner passed by. Protesters sustained their presence for roughly over an hour. One officer was heard saying “go back to mexico” to @lexisdenazeidan in a video shared by her. The group then attempted to march north, to which Detroit Police then cut off the direction, encircling protesters on the sidewalk. Folks were ordered to march a different direction, the march winded towards downtown, up Woodward Ave, and concluded at Campus Martius Park. Following the dispersal, a small group of organizers with @detroitwillbreathe were followed & abruptly ambushed by members of the tactical service division within the DPD. Two organizers were arrested, and released with misdemeanor charges. Two other organizers with the small group were issued felony charges (Lloyd Simpson Jr. & Matt Hollerbach). Lloyd was tased. Simpson Jr. & Hollerbach were later released from custody around 2:30am Monday morning. This comes after a few DPD vehicles were surveilling the dispersal over at Campus Martius. A press conference & rally has been announced for Monday the 20th, 4pm at the Spirit of Detroit Plaza regarding the targeted repression of organizers. cc: @metrotimes // 05.19.2024
