yesterday at Wayne State University, students and protesters gathered at the intersection of Woodward & Warren for a rally, march, and encampment deployment. Students for Justice in Palestine - Wayne State University (
@sjpwsu ) organized this march and action. Other local organizations came out to support.
Over 150 began marching through the midtown / Wayne State area, weaving in and out of campus on the surrounding streets. Eventually, the march concluded in the center of Gullen Mall at Wayne State University.
Suddenly, about 20-30 students, alumni, and protesters dashed over to the lawn area where a flurry of tents were rapidly erected. The remainder of students formed a moving picket circle, surrounding (and blocking the view of) the students putting up the tents.
After 15-20 minutes, most tents were up, and signage was being placed around the newly-founded encampment. A perimeter string, similar to the
@safeumich UofM encampment, was placed around the perimeter by protesters to mark its boundaries. Some loose pallets and barricades were added.
Food began being served, prayer occurred, and the demands were read aloud by
@sjpwsu organizers. Some left the encampment as night approached, but many stayed the night and plan to continue staying at the encampment until all demands are met.
