One more snippets of my conversation with the smart and brilliant @kll5 over on Substack for Lingo on Docs. The work I’ve been doing with @suzanne_alizart on @glimmer.ama is asking - how can the storytelling of the film I’ve made continue long after the credits roll. #filmmaking #femalefilmmakerfriday #femalefilmmaker #documentary #nonde

I spoke to director Jeanie Finlay about creativity and success on the launch of her tenth film, All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea, and about the launch of her new company Glimmerama. We talked about how she makes her bold, independent films that bring her accolades both for her creative work and business acumen. While many of us try to thewrap our heads around new distribution models, dwindling financing options, and mass panic about the future of film I wanted to talk to someone who is not fazed by the noise…. Jeanie is that person. Please check it out! /pub/kathleenlingo/p/dont-wait-for-money-a-deal-or-permission?r=8hst3&utm_medium=ios&shareImageVariant=solid

🚨Substack live🚨today Link in bio 🔗🔥 @kll5 : I’m sitting down with filmmaker Jeanie Finlay - one of Britain’s most distinctive documentary makers - to talk about the launch of @glimmer.ama , her new creative distribution company, and a filmmaking philosophy that waits for no one. Jeanie thinks deeply and strategically about how films get made and how they reach the world. Over two decades she has built a body of work that connects with exactly the audiences it was made for — without relying entirely on the standard gatekeepers of funding, financing or distribution. Jeanie’s body of work is impressive. She was embedded on the set of Game of Thrones for a year to make The Last Watch. She spent six years following writer and activist Aubrey Gordon to make @yrfatfriendfilm , which opened as the top documentary at the UK box office. She made @seahorsefilm , the intimate story of a transgender man’s pregnancy. She has made films for HBO, BBC and IFC, been Emmy nominated, BIFA winning, and had retrospectives at the BFI, Criterion and the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. Her new distribution company, Glimmerama, is the practical expression of everything she has learned: a bold bet that filmmakers don’t have to wait for a deal, a cheque, or permission. You won’t want to miss this one. It will leave you inspired and energized to take on another day and be an artist.... Hope you can join us live or come back to see it later ;) As always, you can send questions to me now!

Park City's farewell, Minneapolis's tragedy, Boulder's promise. And an oral history of SFF '26. *********READ MY SUBSTACK ON LINGO ON DOCS!*********** 2025 is the year that Sundance’s heart broke. The festival’s iconic founder, Robert Redford, passed away and the festival announced it was leaving Park City, its home of 45 years. Sundance 2026 was a study in contradictions: packed but economically irrelevant, nostalgic but forward-looking, celebratory but shadowed by violence. You heard my views, and now to paint a bigger picture and to understand what this moment actually means for independent film? So I asked 20 filmmakers, artists, producers, distributors, and industry insiders to reflect on their experience. What emerged was a community grappling with the same questions I was: What are we doing here? Why does it still matter? How can we keep doing it?

The future for filmmakers might just be direct to consumer.... find your audience online and bring them to your work INSTEAD of hoping a distributor buys your work and monetizes it for you

Penny Lane and I will be chatting live on Monday at 1PM PT/4PM ET! She is every documentary filmmakers’ favorite filmmaker. (Note to Penny- yes, it’s true! And if you aren’t someone’s fave we don’t like them anyway) From Kenny G to Satan to her latest on kids’ music, all of her films vibrate with comedy, depth, and soul. She is a one of a kind filmmaker whose recent entry into the Substack swamp has been not only hugely successful but given us all here a much needed dose of bare, honest, and always entertaining truth bombs. So I couldn’t be more excited about interviewing Ms. Lane on Monday to talk about her movies, career and thoughts on everything in between. Please join us and feel free to send questions in advance if you can’t make it. I will post the video afterwards for those who can’t join. /live-stream/111109?utm_source=live-stream-scheduled-upsell
