Welcome to Jimmy’s Jam: The Stage is Yours!
Have you ever looked at our stage and thought, “I belong up there”? Now is your chance.
We’re thrilled to introduce Jimmy’s Jam, a new curated open-mic series designed to spotlight the incredible local talent right here in our community.
We’re opening our doors (and our mics) to the musicians, singers, and songwriters who have been waiting for their moment to shine at the club.
HOW IT WORKS:
This isn’t your average “sign up at the door” open mic. To keep the vibes high and the talent flowing, Jimmy’s Jam is by application only.
APPLY ANYTIME: We have a rolling application process with no cutoff dates.
The Call-Up: Our team reviews submissions constantly. If you’re selected, we’ll typically reach out the week before the show—but keep your guitar tuned! We’ve been known to call up artists as late as the day of the event.
Your Set: This is your platform to play for your neighbors, friends, and fans in a professional venue.
EVENT DETAILS:
Admission: Free Entry (All Ages!)
Doors Open: 6:00 PM (Dinner & Drinks available)
Music: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Vibe: General Admission seating, open dance floor
Pro Tip: Entry is free, so please bring some love (and cash) to tip the artists and support our local music scene!

I miss my friend. My phone suggests his contact as one of the speed-dial-few whenever I go to share a song or a picture or video of my kids, or a song from Apple Music.
I really was JUST talking to him the other day... and of course the last things he said to me were so full of love and gratitude…
Les checked all the boxes for me: hometown hero, esteemed educator, a few years down the road - a colleague at UNH and USM, we became bandmates and frequent collaborators. When Taylor and I had our little girls, I always knew Les would be awake and down for some late night texting as I bottle-fed my babies. We all know Les loved music. His joy was no secret. But he showed the GREATEST joy whenever we talked about our families. He wanted to share as much wisdom as he could and was a major welcoming voice for me, to fatherhood. He truly was happy. for. me. No BS fake platitudes. No put-on. He really felt joy FOR other people and WITH other people.
He was one of only a few people who I feel really “get me”. He loved me for my silliness, he loved me for my tenderness, he loved me when I was an asshole, he appreciated my jazz stories, he knew I appreciated his jazz stories. He loved me when I didn’t play my best. He loved me when I was professorial and articulate, he loved me when i was uncouth and rough around the edges. He always made me feel like wisdom and kindness and humor were more important than everything else, and he went out of his way to let me know he sees those things in me. He really went out of his way to CLEARLY let me know he loved me, and that he valued what I bring to the table (warts and all).
I am so glad that I got the time I got with him. It checked so many boxes. We all had our own singular and special relationship with him, and the time I shared with him, the way he treated me, and what he taught me just by being my friend, is likely to stick with me a lifetime and help me get through the rest of what life throws at me.
I love you, Les! And I hope this feeling of you not really being gone never dissipates.
Thanks to Jonny Peiffer and South Church Portsmouth for inviting Mike Eff and I to perform this coming Sunday! We are very much looking forward to doing our improvising / hymnody thing in a beautiful space, with lovely people. We hit at 2pm!
This Friday night in Portsmouth, 7pm!!
St. John’s Selects presents Time and Mercy: Music for Lent
An evening of thoughtfully interpreted spirituals and hymns, carefully selected to bring warmth and create a sacred space in which these traditional pieces of religious music may be reimagined and transformed through a range of styles typically native to gospel, jazz, and the avant garde. This intimate performance, featuring Mike Effenberger, keyboards, and Chris Klaxton, trumpet, will draw listeners into the beautiful Roberts Recital Hall at historic St. John’s Episcopal Church, helping set the table for the season of Lent.
Roberts Recital Hall, an intimate venue with a maximum seated capacity of 40, will serve as an ideal setting for this wonderful acoustic music, providing incredible resonance and ambience for concertgoers to delight in the serenity and nuance of Klaxton and Effenberger's reverent interpretations of these well-loved pieces. Don't wait to get your tickets!
