I was lucky enough to be raised by a biologist. My mom cultivated my curiosity of insects and nature. She was my first teacher, entomology professor, cheerleader, and inspiration. Other little girls are born into families where their “abnormal” interests are not encouraged. It is a simple fact that many people only interpret anthropocentric scientific fields as worth studying or funding. This tainted world view is exactly why wildlife ecologists/conservationists exist, attempting to study and correct the wrongs caused by speciesism. We need more nature lovers in the world.
If there’s a little girl in your life who loves animals and thinks being outside in the dirt is more fun than just about anything, please encourage her. One day, she will grow up attempting to save an endangered species. One day, she will be getting paid to do what she loves. One day, she will be at the top of her class, receiving fellowships and grants.
Women in wildlife sciences are the irreplaceable few.
Support the budding scientists in your life.

Female Tarantula Hawk Wasp (Pepsis thisbe)
Collected in June 2020
These wasps are very docile and only sting when provoked but they are known to have one of the most painful stings among all insects. Bug fact of the day: only FEMALE wasps, bees, and ants sting. That’s what we call bad bitch energy.
