I feel like I just came back from a crazy trip. This art commission I finished (not this sketchbook drawing) was like an insane era of my life where I encountered so many strange problems I had to put everything else in my life on hold just to finish it ridiculously late. A little “I’m lonesome sweetheart”/“after you’ve gone” medley for Instagram. I learned I’m Lonesome Sweetheart off the King Oliver and his Orchestra record from 1929, unissued take-2, that I found on the fantastic YouTube channel “exponent_of_sock”. Dustin really makes those old records sound incredible. And After You’ve Gone is a combination of the Marion Harris version from 1919, and the Coon-Sanders Orchestra record, also from 1929. Those 2 are a little more common to find than unissued test pressings, so I’m lucky to have those ones in my record collection, where I can learn them off the original 78s. It’s October, so I wanted to remind everyone of my spooky retro horror inspired synth album I made. There’s a link in the bio to an album on bandcamp, and a few tracks only on YouTube.
I made these a few years back when I got inspired to try something new. lol, so I guess new for me is low brow 1980s horror cinema soundtracks and 8bit video game music. When all your favorite art and music mostly came out of the 1920s and 30s, the 1980s seems pretty futuristic.
It’s far from perfect, and I’d change things if I did this now, and although I could, I’d rather make new things with my current ideas, than go back and alter something I’ve already done to make it more like how I’d want it to be now. Still, I think there’s some interesting ideas in here too. Cinematic ideas that I thought I did a good job at translating to a musical landscape. I really had to think about the language and pacing of cinema, music, and why things are frightening to us. I think a lot of horror cliches play off deep seated fears related to early human survival, and what might be lurking in the dark. I also tried to make something that was poking fun at pop culture, while also celebrating what was fun about it.
This was a fun side project that deeply indulged parts of my personality that are hyper obsessive and detail fixated. For anyone who has ever made electronic music in a DAW, you know what I mean. Nothing I made on this came stock, premade, or preset, except for samples of individual drum hits, and various audio sound fx like screams, or movie dialog. If you listen on headphones and close your eyes, hopefully scenes from the imaginary and derivative movies these songs are supposed to cinematically illustrate will play in your head. So that’s the navel gazing short of it! The sheet music is from 1934, and it’s been recorded by a a good number of artists, from novelty acts like Roy Smeck, to dance bands, to early country music groups. I coulda done a better job, but it’s just my sketchbook, and I wanted to try out some ideas. This was the name of a story in “Strange Tales”, a marvel comic from 1952. “Strange tales of startling suspense”! Sometimes I’ll be riding my bike through the fog, and the headlights from cars will shine through the trees and cast these long moving shadows that look like ghostly apparitions slithering through the fog. I’ll be playing a free show just me and my old guitar from 4-6pm in port Townsend at Taps at the guardhouse in fort worden this Wednesday, August 27th 2025. Most venues don’t seem too keen on hiring solo acts, so there’s a good chance this will be my last show this year, but I am sitting in with dumpster Joe and the boys in October at the old growth old time festival in Seattle, and you can usually catch me busking outside the co-op, although there’s no place to sit down and listen there, unless you bring your own chair like I do. Pro tip: having your own folding chair is what separates us from the animals in the jungle. They don’t teach you that in school, but you’ll never see a tiger with a folding chair he got at a yard sale. I don’t know much, but I can tell ya that much for certain. Incidentally, by that same logic, everything in the known universe either is, or is not, “a potato”. So there ya go. The more you know.
Sometimes I’ll catch a glimpse of myself in a reflection, usually making this face, and think… “who the fuck even am I”? Like, who is that person in there? This whole reality is absurd, and the world is a cruel place. What the hell are we all doing here? Why are things like this? You know what I’m saying? I really like this Luperce Miranda tune. I listen to it a lot while I ride my bike.
