When Christopher Smee welcomes visitors to his Glendale garden, he enjoys giving what his friends jokingly call âthe botanical tour.â
âWould you like to walk through the native chaparral?â he asks, pointing out the California native plants in his front yard: a multi-trunk toyon, bright orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica), lantern-shaped Bladderpod (Cleomella arborea) with yellow flowers that bloom most of the year, purple Arroyo lupines (Lupinus succulentus), fragrant Allen Chickering Sage (Salvia âAllen Chickeringâ), and tall, silvery white sage (Salvia apiana) at the center.
âI love the majesty and structure of the white sage,â he says, pointing out the dried branches he leaves for the birds. âI love the color, and when I learned about its importance to the Indigenous community, I felt it should be at the center of the garden.â

Years ago I watched this show quietly as a kid, still learning the language for parts of myself that didnât yet have words. Years later I found myself behind the camera as the Fab Five moved between locations in Washington and Virginia, showing up for people with kindness, humor, and a fair amount of heart.
Life doesnât hand you many full-circle moments. This was one of them.

As a lifelong Angeleno, it meant a lot getting to traverse the city with this crew and photograph Black Betty, the teamâs iconic SWAT truck, as its red and blue lights spilled across Los Angeles.
I wanted to photograph it in a way that honored the fandom while bringing energy toward the future.
Grateful this was my first union show after joining Local 600 â the first notch in the scripted episodic belt.
