The lived-in elegance of Panarea is utterly captivating. This is the house of siblings Verde and Luchino Visconti, just above town. Stromboli’s caldera glows in the distance at night, and Le Lisce islands are only a short paddle boat ride away. Each of the Aeolian Islands have their distinct personality: from Alicudi’s mules to Panarea’s golf carts, but they all offer the sweetness if doing nothing: dolce far niente. In 1905, after the death of his father, Robert W. Kitson left England for Taormina, where he began work on Casa Cuseni, his home and painting studio. Almost immediately, the villa became a salon for artists and intellectuals from the north who sought refuge in the city’s famously tolerant atmosphere. Its guest book tells part of the story: the photographer Wilhelm von Gloeden, who made Taormina his adopted home; Frank Brangwyn, who designed the furniture and murals in the dining room; D. H. Lawrence, who spent several summers here; and the Futurist artists Giacomo Balla and Fortunato Depero, who conceived the garden as an homage to Dante’s Inferno. Today, the house is faithfully kept by Mimma and Dr Francesco Cundari, custodians of Kitson’s legacy and of Casa Cuseni’s extraordinary life. Years ago, @_andre_c_m_ invited @nicolocastellinibaldissera and I for lunch at his Commenda di San Calogero @commendadisancalogero . After a lunch of grilled meats and vegetables under the lush phoenix palms, we took a long walk through his orange groves. The delicious citrus were flecked with deep crimson—unlike anything I had had before. I was thrilled were able to include this property in the book, and @guidotaroniphotographer perfectly captured the beauty of the house and gardens. Though Andrea shares the property with his parents and sister, he has contributed extensively to it’s current design, particularly to the garden and outbuildings. Seeing their beauty here, it is no wonder that he has become an incredibly sought after landscape designer, with offices both in Sicily and London. Palermo’s past is layered enough that every street offers a different chapter. In Libertà, a new class of nineteenth-century palazzi looked north for inspiration — to English taste and manners. With the Crown Colony of Malta nearby, Anglo-Sicilian families shaping Marsala fortunes, and even Bronte belonging to the heirs of Admiral Nelson, the city was unusually open to English influence. These rooms are by Ernesto Basile (1857–1932), commissioned by Baron Gabriele Chiaramonte di Bordonaro and still cared for by his descendants.
