You know the feeling of missing someone but you donāt know who it is? chasing a feeling? longing for something that you donāt know where to find? Liminal started as a note in my phone that said āi miss everyone iāve never metā and i first tried to write the whole song straight to the point like that, but i couldnāt get myself to finish it.
simultaneously, i was taking a songwriting class with adrianne lenker, and our final prompt was to write a song without using pronouns. This includes taking out āyouā and āIā from the narrative. A song about an unnameable feeling with no subject and no narrator. Somehow the perfect restraint i needed to capture the feeling was placed in my lap right when i needed it.
synchronicity. the feeling of ur stomach dropping in anticipation of the ground mid fall. the muscle firing twinkle in your thighs after a long walk. the deep longing desire to be seen, to love, to let someone get close. overwhelming nothingness. seeing a flower so beautiful you wish you could become it. the slight confusion of the ups and downs that come with winters end and springs begin. thatās what liminal is about.
