The hullabaloo over the City of Kingston's new “wayfinder” signs took an unusual tone Tuesday afternoon when Rondout resident Sharon Boyd took to the streets and put her body on the line by chaining herself to a vintage-looking old-school sign slated for replacement by one of the new-school minimalist signs on lower Broadway at Garraghan Drive. "Communism silences the voice of the people," she said as she walked away. "King Noble gets his way again." Environmental advocates, students and community groups gathered at Seed Song Farm on Tuesday for the fourth stop of a statewide “Energy Hog” bus tour calling on New York to crack down on AI data centers and other energy-intensive infrastructure. Participants urged Gov. Kathy Hochul and state leaders to uphold New York’s landmark Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, rein in energy-hungry AI data centers and cryptocurrency-mining facilities and protect New Yorkers from rising utility costs. The rally featured a bus with a pig-themed exterior flanked by students and environmentalists demanding that the state protect New Yorkers’ wallets and backyards from AI data centers and other energy-intensive infrastructure. “We cannot allow AI data centers to drive up energy costs, pollute our communities, and intensify the climate crisis,” said Eric Wood, senior environmental program coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). Say It Ain't So: Stella's Shuts Its Doors Sending shockwaves throughout Kingston and beyond, the beloved Uptown Italian restaurant Stella’s abruptly shut its doors for good after 50 years in business on North Front Street. The word “iconic” gets thrown around a lot these days, but in the case of Stella’s, its use is more than justified. Famous for its meatballs, salads, penne a la vodka and other dishes, generations of Kingstonians dined there over the decades. Details are scarce at this time; check back for more on this breaking story. Photos by Mia Altamuro #stellaskingston #kingston #kingstonny #localnews #kingstonwire

At Academy Green Park in Kingston on Saturday, protesters gathered in opposition to recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Organizers say “roughly 200” attended; Kingston Wire’s count taken 15 minutes after the rally’s 3 p.m. start time was approximately 120. The protest was organized by the Mid-Hudson Valley Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Veterans for Peace, Mid-East Crisis Response, Jewish Voice for Peace, the African Roots Community Center, Indivisible New Paltz, Newburgh Resists and Rally Middletown. It was also attended by Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, who delivered a speech. More information on the KW website. #kingston #kingstonny #kingstonwire #localnews

Saturday, being Valentine’s Day, was a day of romance for many, but in Kingston and Ulster County, it was also “Democracy Day.” County Executive Jen Metzger was at the Feb. 14 “No Kings” rally in Midtown Kingston to speak to the approximately 150 in attendance and unveil a proclamation marking the day. She was joined by several county legislators, including Greg McCollough (D-Kingston), Bill Murray (D-New Paltz), Dominick Marino (D-Lloyd) and Laura Donovan (D-Marlborough). The proclamation encourages Ulster residents to "reflect on all that we cherish about our Democracy; to lead with empathy, participate fully in civic life, strengthen our community bonds through mutual respect, and acknowledge our responsibilities as citizens – including the responsibility to demand accountability by government, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of every person’s rights, safety, and well-being, without exception." About 70 Kingston High School students left classes Friday to protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They walked across Broadway to stand on the sidewalk before City Hall to stage their demonstration. KPD cruisers were discreetly stationed nearby; Board of Education Trustee Herb Lamb observed the goings-on from the high school’s driveway. “At this point it isn't just Hispanics or Mexicans or whatever that are being targeted," KHS senior Alex Rios said. "It is Americans, blacks, whites, everybody's being targeted.” Photos © TONY ADAMIS #kingston #kingstonny #khs #kingstonwire #localnews

The Pike Plan canopies, which kept people dry, sidewalks cleared of snow, lent Uptown an ambience unlike any other Hudson Valley city and caused decades of debate, are almost completely removed from Wall and North Front streets. It could be years before we all know whether taking them down was a good idea, but we can now see the street as it hasn't looked since Disco was a thing. 📸 © TONY ADAMIS #kingston #kingstonny #pikecanopies #kingstonwire #localnews
