Growing up, all I wanted was a dog. It was my birthday wish on every cake for years, to the point that my mom started specifically asking me not to wish for any more dogs.
We got Charlie when I was sick. He was sick, too. I think I may have forced my momās hand by convincing her he would make me better. I didnāt know then how much better he would make all of us, in every single way.
We grew up with Charlie. He walked from room to room with my mom every morning for years, waking us up for school with kisses. When Bobby and I were in The Wizard of Oz in middle school, he was, too, upstaging all of us as Toto. He was there for all of our Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, our high school graduations, our college graduations. He moved to the city with us. We went on countless walks, went through multitudinous squirrel toys, had innumerable bouts of zoomies across the tri-state area. He brought joy to everyone he met, and even many he didnāt meetāmy family āCarlendarsā grew every year with new requests, and he stole hearts while stealing pizza in a digital commercial spot. He was fiercely protective and loyal. He would wait at his special spot on top of the couch by the window for us, and when we got home heād greet us as if weād been off to war, smiling and wriggling and kissing us endlessly.
We were so spoiled with time, but it never would have been enough. Thank you, Charlie, for being my constant for the past 18.5 years. I hope you know just how much we all love you, and that we made your life as full of joy as you made ours. I will miss you forever.
Coconut Grove Theatre Festival is excited to present āThe Feral Spinster Societyā written by Andie Artur and directed by Melissa Almaguer š§µ
Amelia Beauchamp has spent her life on the sidelines: overlooked by society, dismissed by men, and living a quiet, independent life in 1912 Ohio. When her fiery niece, a passionate suffragist named Felicity, begins plotting a disruptive Fourth of July protest, Amelia is unexpectedly pulled into the fray. What begins as a civil act of rebellion becomes a deeper exploration of power, sacrifice, and loveāincluding the kind women werenāt allowed to speak of at the time.
Blending sharp humor with heartfelt moments, this rousing, intersectional feminist comedy celebrates the unsung women who have defied the status quo by refusing to play by its rules.
