In the basement freezer of my grandparents' home in Jamaica lies approximately 280 lbs of chicken and about 80 lbs of pork, from animals owned by my mother and uncle that were raised and slaughtered by the community members we employ.

My grandmother has had to constantly refill a generator with gasoline to supply the freezer with electricity in the wake of power outages. Without power, it can sustain meat at a low enough temperature for around 3 - 5 days. Because gasoline has been expensive and difficult to acquire in the wake of the storm, power has been intermittent at best, which brings us to this fundraiser and how YOU can help!

We are seeking to raise these funds to PAY FOR THE CHICKEN AND PORK to be FREELY DISTRIBUTED to those without access to food on account of this particularly devastating hurricane. In effect, your donation will help us kill 2 (or 3, maybe 4?) birds with one stone: you'll allow the chicken and pork that my mom and uncle intended to sell to be paid for, and you'll be donating those same essential proteins to the people in our local community who simply can't afford them. One of the economic windfalls of Melissa is the SKYROCKETING price of EVERYTHING in Jamaica, something which had already been occurring in recent years and has recently accelerated. This, coupled with the damage wreaked on the agriculture we depend on for sustenance, has had a catastrophic effect on the cost and availability of all food items across the country.

It would be futile to try and describe the level of detail this machine is capable of capturing. The process of making this particular piece involved aggressive removal; by scraping the entire pre-existing painting off the copper surface, I imbued the work with a palpable examination of the presence of absence, harmonizing what has been left behind, hence its title ๐จ

This scanner, the same kind used by historical institutions like the @metmuseum , was able to reveal marks across the copper surface that brought me back in time, as if I was reliving the process of making the work by seeing scractches and abrasions that would normally be very difficult to discern with the naked eye or even a hi-res photo ๐

One of the first artworks to establish the blend of my parallel series on Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, the countries of my parents' birth. This painting brings together textures and colors from both bodies of work, applied in a viscous, overlapping manner, resulting in an acidic blue-green that oscillates temperature between brutal coolness and fertile warmth. This surface tension is informed by the preceding reds, yellows, and whites, some of which break through in the final composition while others submerge into a swamp-like mix.

In contextual terms, the work deals with the persistence of memory and the way in which nostalgia becomes intertwined with grief when we say the final goodbye to our loved ones. Cherished times become bittersweet to reflect on, and even the brightest points we share with those departed are tinged with longing after their loss. This became clearer than ever before after my grandmother's passing at the end of last year, her loss inexorably linked to my father's in 2016.

The tone of the painting reflects an inherent contradiction, that the beautiful memories we hold dear are made more precious because of the truth that they are singular, unique, and painfully irreplicable. The title alludes to the essential meditation we undertake after loss, wherein moments are gathered and vividly relived in rapid succession, a necessary reflection for grief to transmute into healing and, eventually, give way to more life.
