This time last year I approached Jimmy with a picture of a little black cat, living in a shed in Wooster. At first there was resistance, but the very next day we were heading south with our carrier. We arrived to find that he was the only kitten left, but that was ok because he was OUR first choice from the litter.
We cut right to the chase, calling him Brother, the nickname we knew we’d be using anyway (shout out Murray and Stormy). He quickly fulfilled the name, becoming the snuggliest little bro-cat we could ever want — an immediate friend and companion, during a pretty dark time in my life.
We snuggled the winter away, opened the doors to the springtime, and spent many summer hours outside in the garden together.
Here’s to many more decades together, Brother! May you always have room to sprawl out, long-boy style, have a well-loved collection of puff balls to play fetch with and a sister to lovingly stalk and adore, who in turn, will be perpetually annoyed by you.

I love the process of creating this Risograph calendar, even the sticky parts, when I’m unsure or frustrated. But I will say, the art flew out of me pretty quickly this year. I spent most of the year planting native flowers, admiring the variety of pollinators they attract and enjoying the rhythm of the seasons. I was also inspired by Douglas W Tallany’s book “Nature’s Best Hope” that advocates for a grassroots conservation movement where homeowners transform their yards into habitats for wildlife.
This calendar is for everyone, whether you plant, admire, notice, cultivate or simply appreciate the native wildlife around you. 🌱 🦋 🌳 🐛 🌼 🐦 🌿
